So I been browsing SDN for some time now and decided to make an account just to make a chances thread. Okay so anyways, I am Hispanic, come from an economically disadvantaged family(idk if that helps me) and also a NY resident.

Graduated with degree in Biology (2012)
CGPA: 3.53 (upward trend  3.3/3.0 first 3yrs to 3.9/3.85 last 2yrs)
MD SGPA: 3.42
DO SGPA: 3.48
MCAT: 30P (B:12 P:10 V:8)

ECs
- 1.25yrs volunteering in ED dept (250hrs)
- 1.5yrs volunteering in hospital (500hrs)
- 1yr volunteer work with economically disadvantaged people (350hrs)
- 1yr research in genetics (no publication/poster unfortunately)
- 1.5yrs member of NY Cares – volunteering includes tutoring, helping homeless, helping/participating in kids events during the summer, etc. (100hrs)
- 1yr tutoring middle school children (2-3hrs/week – 80hrs)
- Member of 2 pre-med clubs and 2 other non-med clubs (no leadership roles)
- Shadowing includes: ER doc (12hrs), general surgeon (8hrs), FM (5hrs), trying to get more and DO also
- Good LORs and PS

School list (not final)
In state:
- Albany
- NYMC
- All 4 SUNY schools
- NY Touro (DO)
- Hofstra
- NYCOM (DO)

Out of state:
- UMDNJ
- UMDNJ SOM (DO)
- RWJMS
- Cooper
- PCOM (DO)
- Lake Erie (DO)
- Drexel
- Commonwealth
- Thomas Jefferson

Quick questions:
1) How does my school list look? What schools should I add? (Looking to apply to 20-25)
2) Chances for DO?
3) Chances for MD?

Your chances at DO schools will be excellent once you get that DO shadowing done, along with a DO LOR.

Due to your steep upward grade trend and comprehensive ECs, I expect your odds will exceed the historical chances for a Hispanic applicant with a 3.53/30 of 78%: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=888650

Since I think you have a good shot at all the schools you've listed, why not add some reaches where you think your ECs are a good fit?

Thank you for the response and added confidence in applying this year!
I will definitely try to add some reach schools.
Do you think applying to just 5 DO schools is enough? Should I add some more?

Any other opinions and comments would be greatly appreciated
