I may be up a creek here, but I don't know...I need your help.

I am 26, and grew up when I was 24. That's right. I have been cleaning up crap from pre 24 life for some time.

Here is the scoop:

First went to college at "X". I got "ok" grades here, B's at best, strewn with a few A's, 30 credits total. I dropped out, got into the techie industry and "thought" I was all that. I got married at age 19, and had NO CLUE what life or a career was all about. I then went to college "Y" and got crap grades. I just looked at the transcript, a bunch of "W" for withdrawl by student, an F because the teacher accused me of cheating although I wasn't and got the dean to wipe record clean of cheating; however the F is still there. Minus the W's and the F, my GPA there was 3.28.

Now, two years ago I woke up. Realizing I was a freakin low-life idiot, I decided to start over. I transferred all B and better grades to a new college "Z" and got nothing but A's while I was there. I graduated with honors, and the only B's are TC, the rest is a 4.0.

Now, the rest of my sciences that I am finishing at a CU are all A's (if I can keep it up!!!). These are the Pre-Meds. So, what do you think?

In the past two years, I have done a TON of extracurricular work, a TON! Turned my family around, have a great job, straight A's, wonderful people behind me (military and current doctors), and life is grand.

Are they going to look at my previous career as an idiot and knock me out of the running?

I am worried about this, but there is nothing I can do but tell the ADCOM's that I am a different person, dedicated to life and my career, and will continue to do so.

*shrug* I don't know....

your little detour will certainly not "knock you out of the running", provided these two things: a) you need a compelling explanation for your past academic performance (although some people probably do buy the whole "i was just a turd" story) and b) rock the MCAT like its your j-o-b.

as long as you continue to do what you're doing, you'll probably do just fine!

g'luck :luck: 👍

Well how did you do on your MCAT? I think you might have some interesting story to tell. Is CU, columbia university? because if it is and you got straught A's there, as well as a good MCAT score, then i'm sure adcoms won't mind ignoring your background info. This is only a guess, since I am not so experienced with interviews, so take someone else's word as much as mine.

Good luck though, and btw, I say go for it!

yeah i agree with superdevil. dont try to cover up your past in any essays or interviews. talk about how you've worked hard and completely turned your life around. it could be a pretty compelling story that adcoms might love to read. and DEFINITELY rock the MCAT. that will open up doors for you big time. good luck man!

isnt CU, colorado university?

in any case, good luck to you.....but i know that DO schools always want non-traditional applicants...though your preseverance will def get you into an MD school....DO can be an option if you decide to take it.

Yes, University of Colorado (at colorado springs), is were I am taking premeds. I have not yet taken the MCAT.

I appreciate the feedback, it's better news than I thought. I wish there was a way to delete records from transcripts, especially if you are not using them for TC to where you graduated.

I do have a compelling story however, not to brag. I am humbled every day with y'alls MCAT scores, acceptances, and resume's. Achievement rocks, and you guys are flowing with it. Maybe this is wrong, but I don't want an MD for money, or for social status. I want to help people. I want it to say to myself, my family, and those that said I couldn't for the past 8 years..."I did it." And finally to help others achieve the same.

Thanks for your ear....

Nothing to worry about as long as you keep it up and do well on the MCAT. That's my less than expert opinion.

My story is similar, I was on and off during my UG, sometimes got straight As, other semesters got Bs. I do have an explanation and have been writing it when schools ask, but for the most part I just hope they look at my post-bac grades. In My post bac I got a 3.9 and good MCAT, my advisor told me that schools will focus more on what I have been doing recently. So far I have made the cut at several schools that do screen and hopefully will get some interviews? 🙄 I realize that Ivy League is not an option, but I think (from what I've been told) if your grades are not consistent, schools like to at least see an upward trend which it sounds like you've done. You'll be fine! :luck:

even though this really won't do you any good, i think you would make an excellent doctor someday.....your detour really taught you about life and consequences of stupid things you decide...you'll be one hell of a doctor hopefully...and believe me, just stay the way you are right now....rock your mcats....have a good reason for those adcoms, and i don't think you should have a problem...i wish you the best of luck..

Good day Peterock: Go for it. Medical school is mostly numbers (or connections/URM status) DESPITE what anyone on this website will bitch about. Most current activities are the most important. Get a high MCAT score and you're done!

Bad day Peterock: Plenty of people have had it way worse than you and graduated from top colleges in the country with good stats etc. You were irresponsible then and have a slew of mediocre to decent schools backing up your 2 years of reform vs. 8 years of worthless status.

Thanks everyone for the booster. Supporting each other is why I joined this forum, and I hope I can support you guys in some way! Have any computer or tech problems? Shoot 'em my way!

Have a good one, and thanks again!
