YOU GOT ACCEPTED!!! Reading between lines....

Starting a thread discussing what generally equates to "You are in!", and what is not.

As for me:

1), At one interview 5 weeks ago, my interviewer, who happened to be the director of admission, told me, "I like you, wait for a good news in the mail".

explanation: wait for a good news in the mail usually means "YES", however, I'm not certain because this was only during a interview, my file still had to go through commitee. What if the director liked me, but all other commitee members don't like my file? Does director of admission has that much power to tell student, "wait for a good news in the mail"? This, I consider is a positive sign, but not a certainty.

2), I just called this one school last week (different school from the first case), and got to talk to one of the lady at admissions office (not sure what her position was). She told me that the decision has been made, and I should wait until Dec. Then, I told her how I have a family (I'm married), and we have to make a moving plan based on what dental school I get in. Then she told me that while she still can't tell me yes or no, but that commitee looked at my file favorably/positively, and asked me if I could read between the lines.

explanation: this probably means yes.


Anyone have similar experience they want to share? Also, if anyone think my above assumptions are wrong, please tell me~

Oh, for my stat: 3.2 GPA, 3.0 science, 20 DAT/AA, 20 PAT, 3 years dental research experience, but as you can tell from my login name, I have a maturity of a smurf~ 😀

I agree with the previous post.. Nothing means nothing until you get your letter. Although, I will admit that hearing good feedback from an interviewer is a great ego/confidence builder.

If your DAT/GPA/LORs/essay/interview are all good, then many schools have no reason not to accept you.

I gotta agree with the above. For my part, I'm not gonna read between the lines until there are some written lines to read between (which then actually obviates the whole process of reading between them, but you know what I mean).

Was just hoping not to spend another $300 on plane-ticket/hotel for the next interview...

$$$ drain fast after 7-8 interviews, and I thought sending DAT scores to schools was expensive... no dinner for me tonite!

i heard of a story where the director of admission telling a prospective student "he should feel very confident in being accepted." on december 1st, he was flat out rejected. so im not saying that those are not hint your are hearing about being accepted. its just nothing is comfirmed until december 1st. but with 7-8 interviews, you can pretty much gaurantee you will get one of them.

Yah, don't get your hopes up too high. Having a written letter however would be another story.

I too have been told "We would like to see you attend this school next year.... " - I think that means yes, I also think that - the only guarantee I have is when I hear from that school on Dec 1st.

One of the schools I interviewed at told me (the interviewer) ________ is a good place for someone like you. This may both mean that the school wants someone like me or I should want a school like this. We will have to wait until Dec to see what's up.

good for you! $300 is the decent amount... i had to spend $500 for this one school in western coast and $400 for the other in eastern coast.

$500+$400=$900.

with this, i could've gone to one other school.

$900/$300=3 schools

I think most people in this thread came to the same conclusion that "reading between the line" means "****" because not until you have received some written letter, forget about "reading between the line", am I right?

P.S I know "****" is a bit uncalled for, but when you have spend hundreds of dollars for the application and the interviews, and still have to wait until Dec 1 (or even much later, because not all letters are sent on Dec 1 to everyone), you deserve to say it IMO.

More than likely, you are in. But ask perfect3435 (or something like that) what he thinks of this situation. He was in the same boat and come to find out, he got in as an alternate.

Ah, you are right predentchick. I didn't think about that when admissions people tell you that the decision is already made toward positive side, it could mean wait-listed. =)

If you ask me, trying to read between the lines is a waste of energy and your time, admission is a crazy game. You got 1 month left, make the most of it. Becuase when Dec 1st hits, your life is going to change. Different direction, a different view on things, etc.

I was told at one of my interviews that if I emailed the dean of admissions with my intent to go there that that would go a long way to getting me accepted. He said that they want to accept the applicants that are most serious about going there and that if I did that I'd have a great shot 😉

Since I am so miserable with odds and chance, I prefer to have something tangible in my hands before I declare something is a 'go' - e.g. a letter. Sometimes I am not as good as I should be at reading between the lines. At one of my recent interviews the director of admissions, who interviewed me, made a strong case for his school and why I should attend it. At the interview he shook my hand, winked at me, and said that I had nothing to worry about and that he would be promptly contacting me on December 1st. He said some other things but I don't remember them (reassurances, etc.) as I was thinking to myself: holy schmuck that was blatant! Did I just hear what he said or did he say something that I didn't hear?

I know of someone who was told by a few people on the board that they saw no reason he wouldn't get into school and felt good about getting that person in. Then, he wasn't accepted. You never know until you get the letter. Anything can happen.

That is precisely the reason for my hesitation/doubt. I won't believe it until I have an official reply.
