"You Matched" Email for Applicant with Categorical + Prelim Rank List

One of my friends asked me a question that I didn't know the answer to, and I was hoping one of you might. If you apply to both categorical spots and prelim years in the same specialty and rank them both in one list (so, say, IM residencies plus IM prelim years or gen surg residencies plus surg prelim years), what does a "You matched" email mean? I think it must mean that you matched into either an IM/surg residency *or* an IM/surg prelim year. In other words, it doesn't tell you which kind of program you matched into, only that you matched into one of the two types. Can anyone confirm if that's right?

"If the ONLY thing you put on your rank list was prelims, then the match assumes that's all that you wanted. So, you get an email telling you that you matched. Obviously, you know that you only matched to a prelim position since that's all you ranked.

If you rank ANY categorical or advanced position on your rank list and match prelim, then you get the email saying you matched to a prelim but not an advanced, and get the scramble list."

Yep, you matched in this case = categorical.

I have several advanced programs that were not paired with any prelim positions and was worrying that I might end up in this situation and therefore have no access to the the scramble. Can anyone advice me on this? Should I call NRMP and ask whether I've matched into this situation and ask for the scramble list

pretty sure if youre not getting a scramble list, then u got categorical.
if u are getting one, then u can use that to scramble prelim

Thanks, this is what we needed to know. It's clear from the NRMP wording that a person who ranked a combo of advanced + prelims would have to match to both in order to be considered matched, and a person who ranked prelims only or categoricals only would be considered matched if they matched to any program on their list since all the programs are the same type. But they don't explicitly explain the scenario of a person who applied for categoricals (no advanced) and just applied to a few prelims as a backup. Evidently though the match is smart enough to recognize that a person who ranked any categoricals along with the prelims must have wanted a categorical and not a prelim!

Thank you for your reply! Come to think of it, it makes sense because otherwise they'd need to give me access to the scramble list for the prelim spots. 👍
