Hey guys, i am a 4th year Canadian student and want to get into a dental school in the States EXCEPT i got some problems i’m facing. I am originally from Iraq, and ever since the war started i had to make frequent visits there to visit my grandmother who needed me and my mother’s help, she was stuck there and too old to travel. Of course, that affected my grades BIG TIME, and ever since her unfortunate death in last summer, I was able to stay here and focus on school really well! My grades went from an average of 1.6 in my first three years to roughly 3.5 this year. Good thing I haven’t taken any of the prerequisites yet nor sciences during my first three years since I am majoring in Economics and Finance in a competitive university. I am graduating in two weeks, and i am thinking of joining my friend at Jacksonville State University in Alabama, he says it’s really easy to get good grades plus it’s more favourable for dental schools to accept someone from the states than international.
Also, since September, I founded a non profit organization to help people in need of dental treatment and a for a profit organization that deals with trading dental equipments. Lastly, my dad is a dentist so I’ve been helping him at work for many many years so I understand the whole business
Now my questions are:
· Will I have chance to get in to dental school after two years of pre-dental with grades around 3.5 and a reasonable DAT since I will already have an undergrad?
· Is it true schools in Alabama are relatively easy?
· Are there any universities in the states that you recommend me going to beside the one in Alabama?
Thanks for your help

are you saying that you will pull the 1.6 to a 3.5? did you already do the calculations?

the dental schools will look at the gpa for all the classes you have taken at all the universities you have been to. they wont only look at the gpa for pre-reqs.

i would consider a 3.5 and a good dat competitive.

sorry i dont know about alabama.

just go to any well established 4 year university and you should be good to go.

No I had around 1.6 gpa every year of my first 3 years and currently in 4th year i'm sitting around a 3.5 gpa (not cumulative, just 4th year)
thanks

and sorry i meant "Will I have chance of getting into dental school after I do my two years of pre-dental considering I will continue getting 3.5 gpa and do reasonable on DAT?"

If your GPA is that low for the first 3 years you will have to get a 4.0 this last year and for at least 2 years of post Bac. I am not tell you it can't be done but are pretty late to make this change. Most of us have had dental as our goal from highschool.

i am not sure. you need to calculate what gpa you are going to end up with. i dont know how many classes you have taken and i dont know how many classes you will take.

i wouldnt aim for a 3.5 in future classes. you want to get 4.0 in your future classes.

also dont want to aim for "reasonable" dat. you want to get as high as possible.

you already know this, but the higher your gpa and dat the higher your chances. the lower they are, then the lower your chances.

Post Bac is a must. Show some massive improvement in your grades in the next 3 years. If you do well on the dat and have a reasonable gpa, there shouldn't be a problem.
Make the best out of the worst situation, and you'll always succeed. 👍
