When was your lowest moment during the application cycle?

I think I am having my first lowest moment with this personal statement thing. I have so much to write about, so little time, and my brain is still fried from the MCAT believe it or not. I just don't know where to start. Scratch that. I DID start the ps, it's just that it's so pathetic right now that i saved it as ThisSTINKS.doc.

Wah. Sorry, just ranting. I'm sure I'll encounter even worse (much worse) moments than this. This is just the tip of the iceberg i'm guessing? 😳

you're in for many more low moments. wait til you get your first rejection.

I think potentially his lowest moment is going to be his last rejection without a first acceptance. Not that that is going to happen.

Yeah, for sure, but thing is, I'm sorta prepared for these rejections. I just got caught offguard by how frustrating writing this PS is. I thought it was going to be a relatively enjoyable process but it's been pretty painful so far.

i wrote 8 drafts before i ended up with my final essay. just keep plugging and have somebody who actually knows how to write read your shlt and you should be money

i just found out that my parents hid my dartmouth rejection from me while i was interviewing cuz they didn't want me to feel bad... that would have been embarassing to call and ask why i hadn't gotten anything from them after 7 months....

I hate it when people make comments like the following, but I just have to...

wait until med school.... low moments hit a new high and mean a whole lot of something else.

Dr. Fat?

Ah, sorry. I should be studying for my test tomorrow...instead I'm wasting time on here.

When I got rejected post-interview flat out no waitlist from my state school

I have to say that this is my lowest moment. Being on one waitlist with the Carribean waiting for me as a last resort. Hey at least I have somewhere to go, just in case... 😳

My PS was fun to write! If anyone needs help feel free to PM me! I give a quick response!

my lowest moment came when one of my science profs told me he wouldn't have time to write my LOR. talk about feeling like cr@p! having to depend on others to make my application complete and feeling entirely helpless as the application cycle progressed was a huge nightmare (esp. because i was a humanities major with no other science professors willing to write a good letter).

my lowest moment was when I got three rejections at the same time. One of them was from my in-state school, which was without the secondary. Couple months later, the in-state school sends me a letter stating that it was a mistake.

lowest moment: georgetown rejected me. then 2 weeks later, sent me another rejection letter... just in case i didn't understand it the first time?

My lowest moment was in October of last year, but it was shortly followed by one of my highest moments. After submitting AMCAS in early August and having recieved no interview invites by mid-October, I called UC Irvine for a status update. The girl on the phone saw a note on my file, and she said that although she wasnt sure what it meant, she thought i probably meant that I was rejected. I was crushed... rejected by my state school three weeks after turning in my secondary app? How could they possibly reject me that quickly? It was horrible because I had a gut feeling going into the cycle that UCI was going to be a school that I got into and I was really hoping for an interview. I thought it was an ominous sign as to how the app cycle would turn out.
So there I was later that evening, studying for a molecular bio test that I had put off until the last minute (I started studying at midnight before the test). I was in a bad mood for several reasons, including the UCI "rejection". I checked my email at 1:15 am, and lo and behold, there was an interview invitation to UCI! I couldn't believe it! I emailed my brothers and sisters with a quick message that was probably total gibberish. Funny how it worked out, as theres a pretty decent chance that I'll be starting UCI in August 😀

My second lowest moment was my UCSF pre-interview rejection. I wasn't expecting the letter in the mail... that one stung a bit.

2nd time applicant here with 9 wl over 2 years and NO acceptances, everytime I read the "how did you react when you got in" thread, is a low moment.

Getting waitlisted at USC.

I had a good feeling about the school all year long, got an interview, and stayed with a fabulous student host who offered to be my big sis if I got in. The day before my interview my interviewer had something come up and was not able to make it, so I got to interview with Dean Quinn. The interview went better than could be imagined (I thought) - I was able to hit on all of my high points, got along with Dean Quinn really well, and answered almost every question perfectly. The interview went way longer than it was scheduled to, and she didn't seem inclined to end it. I loved the tour, loved the lunch, loved the school in general.

I was sure I was going to get in, and was just holding off on ordering my USC sweatshirt until I had the acceptance letter in hand. I'd already started thinking about what my life would be like in L.A. 🙄

you've had a pretty good cycle if that was your lowest moment.

I think mine was electronically submitting my BU essay, and only after it was submitted, realizing that I had typed it on the same document as all the Mortal Kombat blood codes for the Sega Genesis. Not only did I look like a fool...but now the dean knows the secret of the blood code on Mortal Kombat!!!!
😱

The "Wait! Please pay the secondary application fee before we reject you!" kind of mistake? Or did you get an acceptance from them after it was all said and done?

I think my lowest moment was when I was struggling to complete my AMCAS primary app and it was the middle of july and reading SDN made me feel like a) I'll never ever get in w/ my gpa, why am I even bothering, and b) omg, my app is so late already, I'll never get in if I turn it in in august, why am I even bothering. It took awhile for me to get over that general feeling that I was the world's worst applicant and there was no point to me applying this cycle. Happiest moment: getting my first interview, from my top choice school, and realizing that the whole cycle would probably go much better than I'd thought (and it did).

My acceptance letter:

JayQuah, you are in no way, shape, or form qualified to be a doctor. But me and the missus have been kicking some @$$ with SubZero since we happened upon your blood codes. So we'll let you in, on the condition that you show me how to beat Sonic 2.

Yours,
Dean Sega

I'd have to say that my lowest moment came about 13 months ago when I realized that I wasnt getting in anywhere on my first round of applications. So I poured myself a few scotches (The Dimple Pinch on the rocks), and started re-writing my personal statement on my laptop while not very sober at all. I actually used the basic skeleton of that essay for my PS, once I removed the curses, mis-spellings and put it into a form that somewhat resembled english. But let me tell you, realizing that you're not getting off those waitlists is one of the worst feelings on earth.

Right now, languishing on 5 damn waitlists, and STILL haven't started the wretched PS. I hate writing more than anything on the planet!!!!!

My lowest point in the application process? Hmm...where to start? There's so many of them!

Well, I guess it would have to be after I moved back home to take some courses and study for the MCAT and my dad was hounding me every day about my decision to go to med school. It really hurt that he was so opposed to medical school. He felt I was imposing on him financially even though I told him I would not borrow any money from him for med school. At that point, I didn't have any friends in the city and felt extremely lonely. I think SDN was my only support system outside of my mom. It was really tough. At night, I stayed up wondering about what would happen to me if I didn't go into med school, how my friends would react, what everyone will think.

At that point, I had given up a well paying job, my new friends, and moved back home to live with a man who tried every which way to convince me to not go to med school. He hassled me about getting a job. He kept on asking me what would happen if I didn't get in (never, "hey, maybe you will get in"). He was almost giddy when he thought I did poorly on my MCAT (he assumed a 35 was the norm because a collegue's daughter got a 36). He didn't offer any financial assistant for my classes or for applications.

At that point, all I could think was if I could only get that acceptance....and I did!

I tell anyone who is worried about this process that there is an end to this process and it IS all worth it if you stick it out.

Same here. I asked for an LOR from my Chem professor - I did very well in his class and aced all exams. However, that was his last semester of teaching, and retired after that. He thought that it would not be appropriate for him to provide an LOR since he was not affiliated with the school anymore. And he knew me so well! what a downer...

I think my lowest point was when I received my MCAT scores in October. I had studied hard ALL summer and was consistently getting 29's on practice exams. I felt that I at least received a 27 and was heartbroken when I received a 25 (with a 6 on verbal!! 🙁 ) And this was AFTER i submitted AMCA's and secondaries....now I'm only on one waitlist and preparing to re-apply and take a master's program instead. I guess everything happens for a reason and if I don't get off the waitlist, I'll be ready for round two!! 🙂

This isn't really a "low moment", but I hated repeatedly telling everyone in February that the interview season was over and I probably wasn't going to get anymore. They didn't understand the concept of non-rolling schools sending rejections in March when they stopped sending interview invites in Jan. They just assumed since I hadn't been rejected yet, I MUST be getting an interview. Also, having all of your friends and family convinced you're SO SMART and having them absolutely incredulous that you didn't get into Harvard, Yale AND Stanford - it makes you feel like something's wrong with you, even if you know it's impossible to get into these schools.

I think I am having a low moment right now but I don't really have a great reason. I just moved home for the summer. I hate moving home for the summer. My step-mom and my brother are the only ones usually home (my dad travels for work a lot), and I am convinced that my step-mom absolutely hates me. She makes dirty looks at me when I haven't even done anything. She is super pissed that I wanted a graduation party (probably because she didn't get the chance to go to college), and I am just so tired of walking on egg shells. I hope I never have to live at home again. I have been accepted at VCU and SIU and am still making my decision (well I just found out about SIU last week). I was on six waitlists last month with no acceptances but I hadn't lost hope yet, and luckily there was hope...

There were many low points this year...

-getting rejected pre-secondary from UCSF, even though it was my top choice, I would have killed to go there, and my mom is an alum...
-getting rejected post-interview from Columbia, even though it was my second top choice (after UCSF), and I had sent multiplie LOIs...
-getting rejected post-interview from NYU, even though it was my third top choice (after Columbia)...I was apparently one of the only ones in the world to be rejected post-interview... =X
-languishing on 7 different waitlists/holds/deferred decision categories, not even getting immediately accepted into my backup schools.

Oy...haha...what a terrible year. But it worked out in the end. =)

I had a few... My interview at my state school went terrible. (outright rejection shortly thereafter)

Discovering SDN... realizing how niave I had been during my application cycle and interviews and that I had made multiple mistakes. I also felt that I wasn't very competitive of an applicant due to SDN.

I was told (over the mail) that I was waitlisted at my local Osteopathic school. Before this phone call, I was holding onto all hope for KCUMB, certain that I wasn't getting into my OOS school, KU Med. Then the waitlist... I had a sinking feeling that it meant I wasn't going anywhere. I have two young children and have been out of school for a while. Studying for the MCAT while working full time and having a toddler was terrible and I really didn't want to do it again.
Then the tide turned for me... I recieved a letter (the same day) telling me that I had been accepted to KCUMB. Apparently the phone call was a mistake! I was elated. Then a month later, against all odds, I got an acceptance from KU Med too! I didn't believe it for a week.
I feel for all of those on waitlists. I am not a very patient person and would be in torment if on a waitlist right now. Honestly, the only way I would've handled it was to expect the worst.

Same for me. It felt like a complete waste of a summer for me. I was pretty crushed that night.

Good luck to you, frany!

As they said.... just wait until you are in med school. Almost everyone I know has considering quitting at least once in their first year.

As for the PS, think of a story and show off your unique attributes. IF you run into a wall, contact someone on the PS helplist.

My lowest moment is about now. For quite a while I've been thinking about how to write the personal statement. I'm not very good at writing and there is so many things to write about. Also I have a major blemish on my application I need to address . I dont' know how the MCAT will turn out (had a sinking feeling after the MCAT). This application cycle is looking long and painful. I try to stay positive and do my best, but the stress is making me depressed.
I just hope by the end of this cycle I have one acceptance to a place I like to attend (just one!!)

First time I applied- sitting in class in May hearing my classmates talk about which schools they were going to while I was sitting in the middle third of the waitlist for one school which essentially said hell had to freeze over for them to dip that far into the list.
Second time- rushing home every Friday after the interview at my dream school and realizing that dream school hadn't called to let me in 🙁 Pathetic I know but I had wanted to go to that med school since the beginning of undergrad.
Looking in my crystal ball, I predict the low point in med school will be being pregnant and sleep deprived during the third year. Oh yeah, and when I f*** up and kill a patient b/c I'm tired.

I dunno about that. I am finishing up in an MD-PhD program and still my lowest point in this whole process has been my interview at Case Western (which was my first interview). All day everything was great until the last interviewer went off on me because he disagreed with my research method. Worse still, he followed me to the elevator so he could continue arguing and complaining. 🙁 I spent the rest of the application cycle :scared: that I would meet another like him.

Anatomy, for all its difficulty, felt like a breeze by comparison. 😳

My lowest moment was when I refreshed this forum for the eighth time in a row without any new posts having been made.

I rock.

Definitely some time late last October. Same idea. I had thought that my MCAT scores would be decent, based on practice tests, and how I had felt during the test. I submitted the AMCAS and the $$ and all the secondaries and their $$ only to get the bad news on my scores. Spent the weekend basically crying or sleeping to make it go away... :scared: since I knew that I'd probably be getting 17 rejection letters over the following months....

But then UMass invited me for an interview & hope reappeared (so unfair!) for a while... so the 2nd lowest moment was when I got the rejection letter from those creeps who wasted my time & got my hopes up for nothing at UMass. And the 3rd lowest moment is probably some time this week, when I start writing a new PS for the new application cycle, and try to find some enthusiasm for why I want to do this....

I'm definitely at my lowest now, even though this whole process has been a really big downer. Not only does my hope rest on one waitlist, but the two people who have been commiserating with me throughout the pains of this past year just got accepted and are on a non-stop high. So yes, I'm feeling crappy because I still haven't gotten in, but I feel even worse that I can't find it within myself to be truly happy for my friends.

Edit: Wow, after re-reading my post, I realized it made me sound really depressed. I thought I should add that I have an awesome life and am actually a really happy person!! This whole med school thing has been a big 👎 , but I know that not getting in wouldn't be the worst thing ever, and I am looking forward to bettering my app 😀

wow...an application thats the lowest moment yet in your lives? nevermind

My big two are bombing my interview at the school I am going to attend next year. It felt like such a horrible interview, and I was sure I was going to be rejected. My second was getting a hold letter from my state school -- that really bothered me, while getting rejected later didn't hit me as hard because I guess I already knew it was probably going to go that way.

I just encountered another sad moment. Someone commented "your mdapp profile is pathetic" ... 🙁 ofcourse I deleted it. I know I should act callous twds others' insults, but that just hurt. I guess I'm just having a low week. Personal statements make me AHGAHGH!!!!! 😎

don't be saddened by anonymous losers on an internet forum, because well, they're anonymous losers.....on an internet forum.
