Hi all,
My girlfriend is in first year of medical school. She went through some tough times in this first year. Sadly, she now has to repeat the first year. I know for the fact that she tried really hard during this first year to keep up with all the exams, lectures, and meetings. I, myself, didn't feel so good after i heard that she has to repeat the first year; but i know it must be 100 times worse for her. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experiences who wants to share or any thoughts that i can make her feel better. Something would make her motivate again. After all, medical school is not easy. Otherwise, anyone can do it.

Thanks

I know of 2 people in my med school class who had to repeat a year; one went into ophtho and one went into anesthesia. So it's not the end of the world.

The most important thing is determine why she has to repeat and correct those issues otherwise she will not do well again. If there were family, psychological, or study issues she needs to fix them or get the appropriate treatment. Study and academic issues are easy to fix. Psychological ones may take more time. Other medical issues may adversely affect her performance as well.

Sorry to hear she has to repeat the year. It's not the end of the world. In every med school, at least one person, often several people, have to repeat first year. She'll know the material that much better for second year. Will she be graded again for first year? If so, just tell her to do as well as possible. She'll be fine in the end.

Oh and tell her that she's fortunate in a way. Some students at my school were dismissed for academic problems this year. No second chance.

As others have stated, she's still in the game.

Personally, I've remediated stuff in undergrad and turned out no worse for the wear.
