I think it's foolhardy not to prioritize your schools in advance. It could potentially save you money and prevent headaches. After all, if you don't know enough about the programs to have already decided which ones you like most, how are you going to answer the interviewers questions?

If you're not going to play favorites in the name of "not counting our chickens before they hatch", then I have to ask just how exactly is one supposed to choose which schools to apply to?

this is true.

I'm just curious after seeing a lot of people put University of Pittsburgh on their top 5. Why does everyone refer to it as ?UPitt?? I went there for undergrad, and, I swear, the only people that I ever heard refer to the school as UPitt (as opposed to ?Pitt? or ?Pittsburgh?) were either people who had never been to Pittsburgh, or had attended the school in the 1970s. Is it different for the med school?

i write UPitt because that is how it is always written in the brackets for march madness. no one at umich calls it umich either. we call it michigan or u of m.

You have a good point.

I just think that the more healthy approach for me is to not get too worked up about which schools I want to go to during this part of the process - the waiting part. I'll prioritize after I've gotten some more feedback, and had the chance to visit campuses.

1. harvard
2. stanford
3. hopkins
4. UCSF
5. mayo

My picks:

1. Yale - my undergrad; loved it then, know I will love it now. Perhaps surprisingly, the people here are pretty cool, and _mostly_ down-to-Earth. The flexibility of the med school curriculum is a huge plus (um? Hello? TRUE pass/fail system first two years) and *gasp* I LOVE New Haven -- it's really quaint and cozy...although, believe me, I do know that opinions differ on this subject...

2. JHU - Boyfriend's most likely going to be in D.C., so proximity to him is a plus! And, well, it's Hopkin's. Not too psyched about the potential for crazy pre-meds-turned-med-students, but the education's undeniably top notch.

3/4. MSSM/NYU - work at MSSM, feel comfortable here -- the med students are also pretty cool; good residency match. I just like NYU's vibe -- have friends there, all of whom are very happy.

5. U. Penn - Love Philly; it's a great program; people seem fun.

But, alas, it's not up to me!
Darn.
