Hi-
Could anyone post a link as to where I can find the mechanism of action of zoloft? I can't seem to find this information anywhere and the journal article that I need is not available at my school since my school started suscribing to the annals of pharmacotherapy in 1992 (the actual journal article I need was published in 1991). Thanks 🙂

Zoloft is an SSRI, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor.

Thanks Katel. However, I actually already know that information. What I need is a link where I can find out how Zoloft is an SSRI. Meaning- does it degrade some sort of enzyme, or does it bind to some sort of site at the the neuron where serotonin would normally get taken back in, etc....

Part of it's mechanism is theorized to be linked to the down-regulation of serotonin receptors in addition to increasing the amount of serotonin within synapes. If you are looking for an exact explanation, I don't think that one doesn't exist. Levels of serotonin in the brain have been known to play a role in mood disorders for some time now, prozac was one of the first drugs designed with a molecular target in mind.
