The heart of tooth, pulp is divided into layers called zones. These are named according to their structural material. Each component has its own functions.
From inside towards dentin the zones are:
Pulp core or pulp proper = centre of pulp. This layer acts as a support system for peripheral pulp because it contains blood vessels and nerves. These vital structures branch out to supply the other layers of pulp. The blood vessels arise from superior and inferior alveolar arteries.
The nerves follow the course of blood vessels and supply the smooth muscles of these blood vessels. When stimulated by cold, heat, pressure, operative procedure and chemicals, the nerves cause vasoconstriction of blood vessels. They are called sympathetic nerves.
Cell rich zone : This layer is rich in cells which are fibroblasts and undifferentiated mesenchymal cells. The fibroblasts produce collagen fibers.
The function of undifferentiated cells is that they become either fibroblasts or odontoblasts or macrophage according to need.
Most abundant cell in pulp: Fibroblast
Second most abundant cell in pulp: Odontoblast
Cell free zone of Weil: Free from cells, but contains plexuses (network) of capillaries and nerves which branch out in this layer. The nerve plexus of Rashkow which arises from nerves in pulp core is present in this layer
Odondoblastic layer: It contains the odontoblasts and lies next to dentin. Their function is to form dentin and provide nourishment to the dentin through the vessels of pulp.
In an ageing pulp, the function of fibroblasts decreases and they appear spindle shaped called fibrocytes. As the fibroblasts produce collagen fibers, there is increase in number of fibers but the fibroblasts decrease in number.
