It would be exceptionally unusual for a general surgery program to add an extra date. Programs are small and generally only have 2-4 dates, which are planed nearly a year in advance due to the logistics involved.

When you want to contact the programs that haven't gotten back to you at all, do you usually email the PD or program coordinator? And how late into the season do they send out invites?

Florida-Jacksonville sent out invites at some point. I called the program coordinator for an up-date and was told I was on a list to interview (but had not received any emails yet) and was given Dec 4th at that time.

BIDMC sent another invite wave yesterday. Sorry if I'm giving false hope but IMO it's not over yet =).
 
Any word about prelim position invites? I haven't heard about any of the prelim positions I applied to and I was really hoping for a couple more interviews.

Hey, I'm slowly still getting invites (got one last night from a prgm I thought I had no chance at). I'm sure most are silent rejections by now, but some places are still giving them out, for what it's worth.

I haven't gotten a rejection in a while, but I'm sure people will be getting more invites as cancellations come in. I know I'm planning to cancel at least 3 interviews in January in the next week or so and I'm assuming they'll go to someone on the waitlist (yes, I hate to be that person who posts this kind of crap)

Is there anyone who has a January 17-18 interview at UPMC that is willing to switch with a January 10-11 spot? I have another interview on the 10th and cannot switch that one.

Would anyone who interviewed this year be willing to talk about which programs require research? It is so confusing when the website says things like "each yr 4/5 pursue two years in the lab." (Northwestern). There are lots like this- I just want to know if research is required so I can know whether or not to waste money on apps. I want to go to a decent academic program where I can see a good diversity of pathology, work with pioneers in the field, and have opportunities for scholarly work. But, I don't want to be forced into postponing my career two years....

Specifically programs I am thinking are northwestern, u chicago, louisville, utsw, Wisconsin, Indiana, Colorado, vandy, cinci

Edit: I realize freida shows length, but this doesn't seem to be too accurate

I'll comment on the programs I interviewed at:

-UTSW: research encouraged but it's not a requirement; with such a huge program I don't think they have problems with having to force someone into the lab
-Wisconsin: a de facto requirement regardless of what their website or FREIDA says; their chair is making a huge push for raising the academic profile, most notably through the creation of a surgical outcomes center for research (WISOR I think it's called); great opportunities here for research in transplant and surg-onc, probably not so much if you're wanting to do trauma work (per chief there)
-Colorado: at this point they appear to be flexible either way but I wouldn't be surprised if someone in their intern class ends up having to do research; they made a big deal about their basic science and outcomes research when I interviewed and when I asked if they would be going to all 7-year tracks my interviewer talked around the subject; but for now they are having people going straight through
-Cincinnati: you'll be doing 2 years in a lab if you match here; you probably won't even have the option to do clinical outcomes or public policy; they are huge on ped-surg here and most of their residents research in that or in trauma/cc

Now that interviews are mostly over.... are people starting to receive "we've ranked you highly and we'd love to train you" emails. I have heard to take these with a "grain of salt." Some sound more specific than others, but who knows - maybe the program wrote out 30 semi-specific emails! Just wondering what people's thoughts where on the ranking you highly emails.
