I'm a third time applicant. Male, 24, white/asian biracial ORM, from western NC (appalachian mountains).
3.5 cGPA/ 3.3sGPA (strong upward trend).

The first time I applied was VERY late, in October, to 4 schools, and a 26 MCAT (10-6-10 P-V-B).

Second, I improved my MCAT to a 30 (11-9-10 P-V-B), increased all volunteering, shadowing, etc. Applied to 6 schools, one interview (ECU) and rejections across the board. I received post-interview feedback from the dean who advised me to add more non-clinical/medical volunteering and shadow diverse areas of medicine (previously only emergency department shadowing).

This time around, I'm applying to significantly more schools, having improved my application for a third time by doing more non-clinical volunteering and shadowing more types of doctors. I'm also working for a pharmaceutical company as an analytical chemist testing IV solutions.

Summary of EC's:

  • ~250 hours of volunteering with adults with developmental disabilities
  • 45 hours note taking for students with disabilities
  • 100 hours non-paid tutoring chemistry for HS/CC-level students
  • ~230 hours of Emergency Dept. volunteering at two different hospitals, over several years
  • ~50 hours of pediatric child life volunteering at inpatient pedes hospital
  • ~80 hours ED shadowing
  • 6 months full-time, 1000 hours research intern at chemistry lab working with polymers/material science
  • 1.5 years, 45-hour work weeks as analytical chemist in pharmaceutical company
  • Study abroad for a summer in Germany (have a BA in German)
  • NEW: 10 hours shadowing pediatrician primary care, 10 hours family medicine
  • NEW: 50 volunteer through organization at work that does fundraising/community service for the less-fortunate, includes Angel Trees/Back to school Backpacks/ Habitat for Humanity
  • NEW: 50 Volunteer with Humane Society, take shelter dogs on hikes around Western NC.
During the gap I've just expanded upon various volunteering and added the new activities above.

School list:
Albany Medical College
Rosalind Franklin
East Virginia Medical School
Quinniapac
George Washington (iffy-- lots of applications here, slim chances)
Loyola
Marshall University (I have strong ties to appalachia-- raised here/entire family is here, still living in this area).
West Virginia University School of Medicine (same as above)
New York Medical College
Rush Medical College
Thomas Jefferson University
Temple University
ECU (3rd time applicant)
Commonwealth Medical College
Brown University
Tulane University
UNC (3rd time applicant)
University of Rochester
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest

I'm up in the air about Western Michigan (will be 3rd time) and Oakland University (will be second). Any advice on this would be appreciated. Also, any school I should add to be within shooting range would be appreciated. I would prefer to stay in-state or near, and preferably east coast.

Thanks all for your help.
