Greetings pathology residents and attendings,

I'm a 4th year medical student getting ready to apply to residency programs. Texas born and bred, so obviously looking to stay in-state. Will apply to the 10 pathology programs in Texas. Outside of those 10, not sure where else to apply. Looking to stay in the south but open to moving to the west coast. Interested in combined AP/CP. Any programs that y'all recommend? What's a good number of programs to apply to?

Thank you in advance.

A lot will depend on how competitive you think your application is overall, and what caliber of program you'd like to target. Most importantly, what kind of career in pathology are you hoping to have?

Good reputation in the south-- Vanderbilt, Emory, UVa, Duke, UNC, Wake Forest (if you like forensics in particular).

California can be a tough nut to crack if you have no ties there, but it is much easier to get into, say, Harbor-UCLA or UC Davis than Stanford. Personally I think the only programs worth going to in Cali are UCLA, UCSD, Stanford and UCSF. Univ of Washington is wonderful; OHSU a little less so IMO (less academic).
