I understand why C is a D structure but can someone explain how to get Alpha and Beta from a fischer projection?

alpha refers to 1 carbon away from COO- and beta refers to 2 carbons away from COO-.

If you orient the fischer projections properly so that COO- is the top most carbon, (C) gives the D isomer.
