anyone new to TSU?

I just moved here and I am living with a friend-who also just moved here not long ago. Does anyone know where some good,not so expensive, safe-for-a-single-girl,apartments in the Loop of houston or in the downtown area? I have been looking around, but since i know nothing of houston, i dont know exactly what neighborhood is appropriate. can someone point me in the right part of town to look? I want to move into an apartment by august, since pharm school starts soon after. Anything is appreciated!
