I'm am just now applying for an elective in September. I decided late on EM since my core EM rotation wasn't until this month. I've been emailing programs to ask if they have any open spots before I submit a VSAS. This is late in the game. I just don't see the need to throw money away if they are just going to say, "sorry, all spots have already been filled." I'm hoping this is ok?

I know of a couple of now EM residents who called up programs to arrange away rotations somewhat late in the game last year. They each got an away rotation this way but the programs still made them make it official through VSAS (still have to pay). Definitely call each program that you're interested in and ask if you can rotate there soon. The worst thing that can happen is they say no - it won't hurt you to ask. Good luck!
