Campbell University (CUSOM) DIscussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know people said they have called to get their letters of rec attached to their file faster. Has anyone had any luck communicating with CUSOM via email?

I think the best way to contact them if you want an immediate answer is by phone. They are very friendly, and always willing to help.

I figured...I already sent off an email inquiring about my letters...guess I'll just give it more time. Thanks for the response.

Talk to Joy on Monday to clarify the letters. They might get confused with the extra letters. Also, they have over 1,000 applications now and starting to do high GPA and MCAT cut offs.

Seriously...dang I hope my chances didn't get smashed because they aren't downloading my letters...that would suck bad.

Edit: A while back I also sent an email informing them of the extra letters (beyond the required ones) that were being sent by VIrtualEvals as well. Wasn't really expecting a response to that email...although it would have been nice haha.

FYI to anyone who hasn't heard anything...I'd advise you to check your status with CUSOM. I submitted my secondary via email and paid on 7/31, emailed them for a status check on 8/14, still never heard anything so I emailed again and called on 8/16, they were supposed to call me back and never did. Just received an email today that they never received my secondary. Almost a month later. So just a word of advice...check your status sooner than later! Hoping for some good news now that I've finally heard back :)

Dang...that is scary... And was kinda what I was worried about. Interestingly enough I received a complete email today though! Don't know if it had to do with the email I sent on Thursday. Either way, after hearing your story though, I am extra glad it came.

C'mon Campbell.. waiting on some love

At which point during the application process are LORs required. I know with aamcas you can submit primary without LORs. How does aacomas work? What LORs does campbell want.

In state applicant with 1 year honors research, biology and chemistry major, 3.7 science, 3.3 non science, 31L, was anatomy & physiology lab TA for 1 year and certified tutor for 2 years, and as of now shadowed pulmonologist, anesthesiologist, orthopedic surgeon, family doctor, gastroenterologist, (shadowing hours total ~12 hours because of privacy issues, etc.) worked in pharmaceutical testing lab for 2 years, volunteered at emergency department 1 year (200 hours total), volunteered at homeless shelter 2 months (10 hours total). what do you think my chances are? I have not yet submitted my primary application..working on personal statement. Assuming I get a secondary, what are my chances of interview, and if i do well at interview what are my chances of being accepted. How do I compare to other applicants?

thanks that really helps
Bro these are questions that you can easily find answers to by going to the Campbell website, doing a simple search or even just reading through this thread. Some of your other questions like " Assuming I get a secondary, what are my chances of interview, and if i do well at interview what are my chances of being accepted" are hypothetical and can't really be answered by anyone... unless of course you think this forum is frequented by the clairvoyant. (it's not).

+1

You can have the status and not get in. You never know. Schools like Campbell are looking for people that fit their mold, not necessarily have the status.

I'm not saying it is bad, I'm just saying that the game of owning medical schools is not for small mid level colleges. It's for reputable research universities with huge endowments.

If you look at the website the reason that they are establishing the school is to help North Carolina gain access to more physicians. As a state of the south with mild winters they are heavy with retirees, thus they will be hurting for physicians as more baby boomers retire.

If having a medical school were to be left to the larger colleges and universities we as a country will not be able to meet the need for physicians over the next 15 years. Additionally, if you look at AACOM and LCME, you will see that the newest medical schools on both sides of the line are smaller schools or smaller towns. This is because they are trying to attract physicians who are going to be willing to serve in rural communities as family practitioners. One of the best DO programs started out and still is a stand alone school (AT Still and WVCOM). What really needs to be seen is the faculty that they have brought on.

I would anticipate that the medical faculty will be mainly IMs and Family practice and will all be focused on developing new DOs so they can be prepared to handle the rigors of primary care in rural America including the ER call coverage they will need to respond to.

I am looking at CUSOM as a non-traditional student (former rural hospital administrator) and starting medical school as a 31 year-ol family man with an MBA. For me, this school makes a lot of sense and I have a GPA of 3.5/3.6 and an MCAT score of 31Q. I think that your assessment of the school having empty seats is a little obtuse considering there are so many applicants across the country that do not get accepted into their number 1 pick. This school is number 5 on my list so, if I do not get into the EDPs for which I applied, this school gets my application.

Oh yeah that's true, I don't know where they're gonna find the hospitals for clinical rotations. A friend of mine is in the pharmacy school at Campbell and he just started his clinical last month, at a small nursing home, right next to a hospital, he doesn't even have the access to the hospital..which I was a bit surprised..

The website states that they will go to other cities for their rotations. A rural MD school opened in Salina, KS and the students rotate through smaller hospitals like McPherson, which is 48 beds, but they have only one surgeon on call, so in a surgical rotation, a medical student gets all the calls before the attending. It is a pretty sweet set up that allows you to get beaucoups experience that you cannot get at a larger facility.

That is their goal, but they want to train surgeons and all types of doctors. They acknowledge the need to IM and Family care but also specialists like OB/GYN and such.

And like you said, they are well prepared for starting a medical school, bringing in the asst dean from VCOM, and staff from all over (Drexel Med for ex). They are dedicated to their med school and their students so i wouldnt count it off just because its a small univ.

Also, i went to USF too! go bulls!

Who are the Bulls? I went to University of Santa Fe....JK! Yeah I got my ungrad in 2002 and MBA in 2005. Its been a while. I will be applying once I have a feel as to whether or not I will be interviewing at my EDP programs. Congrats on your acceptance. I hope that I can get in then.

Maybe we can meet up if you and I both get to go there, at least we will have one thing in common.

ACCEPTED!!!!! Unbelievably excited right now!!!!

Congrats to both of you! Can you provide any insight to your experiences here and any advice for those of that will receive interviews here?

NO!

Haha jk. Of course. So the interview day for me and my group was different than the other days apparently. Instead of all 8-10 students gathering together in the morning, getting and intro, then tour, lunch, and then the interviews, we were separated into 2 groups of 5. I and 4 other students arrived around 930am to find out another 5 students had already been interviewing that morning at 8am. After their interviews finished, they met up with us in the conference room where we all went through the intro, financial aid, lunch, and tour. Afterward, my group had our interviews while the other group were able to leave.

The overall day was awesome. So relaxed. All the faculty and staff, and the interviewees were very friendly. You can tell the staff were very excited for the new school and new candidates (you can tell because they mentioned it about 1000 times haha). The undergrad campus is very nice, clean. The new medical school building is AMAZING. Looks like a fortress. The planned curriculum sounds like its going to be strong (reminded me of a hybrid between LECOM's PBL and WVSOM's system's based). All of the faculty have great amounts of experience coming from all over, and its a mix of MDs and DOs. They set up so many amazing opportunities for their students. I don't want to give specifics because I want you all to experience the excitement fresh for yourselves.

Going into the day, I was hesitant because it's a new school, but I kept an open-mind. After the day was over, I was sold. They have so much invested into us because the new students are going to determine how strong CUSOM will be. Everyone was so passionate about medicine and the school and so friendly. A welcoming environment is what I like. They plan to be competitive with Duke and UNC in clinical services, which says a lot.

CUSOM is definitely going to be a force to reckon with. If you didn't apply because you were hesitant about attending a new school, I say apply, go to the interview, and your mind will change in a heartbeat.

Downside is the location. Not much to do in Buies Creek. Pretty empty. BUT, that shouldn't be too much of an issue, since we're going to be studying pretty much all day every day haha.

My advice is RELAX. Think about what to say before you answer their questions (which are mostly pretty straight forward questions regarding yourself and your application). All they want to do is to get to know you as a person, see if your personality will meet their criteria (good communication skills, friendly, extroverted). You'll be interviewed by 3 different faculty members, 30 minutes each. Be honest, polite, and just have a good conversation :)

def what i was thinking!! this is going to be a really good school. i was sold on the school and their PBL/system mixed curriculum.

Def excited to start and can't wait for next year!!!!

congrats to you and everyone else that got accepted

Oh it was definitely your tips!!! ;)

are you pretty sure Campbell will be your new home next year?

i can't say that with 100% certainty because its a year from now and anything can happen. But unless something drastic happens, im about 95% sure that's the school I want to go to.

I feel the same...I am going to wait to hear from a few other schools, but Campbell really did blow me away! Thanks again for all your help.

Does anyone know what days of the week the school has been holding interviews?

Accepted! I think their interviews are Mondays and Tuesdays, but I'm not 100% sure. When I got an II those were the options they gave me. PM me if you have any questions about the school, interview, or anything else! Super excited about this place.

someone should make an accepted fb page...just sayin :)

Damn I want an II here. My neurosis is become unbearable...

Mr. K It will happen give it time. I am freaking out also. I called to find out about why I was placed on hold and they had positive things to say and they are just waiting on my transcript update to process. But I am with you in that it is harder to get in as time goes by and more apps come in....but just stay positive man and I WILL SEE YOU there next year.

just got interview invite here! :):)
When were you complete?

Should I update Campbell about my new research gig:

A) via email
B) via updated AACOMAS
C) not at all, just talk about it if I get an interview

I would do it by email. Mattie Bendall (previously from VCOM-CC) is wonderfully easy to talk to and she's on top of things. I think that she would make sure to add it to your application!

Care to share your stats maybe?
I wonder if they are grouping people by their completion date or just picking the best out of the giantic pile of applications they have thus far.

I sent them a letter of intent. Maybe if you did a letter like that and then added what you are doing now since your app that might help.

Does anyone know a friend who goes to Campbell U?
I ask because I am not a religious person at all. I see that CUSOM is a religious school that is connected with the baptist views. I just received the call that I am invited to interview (!!!!) but I am worried that it seems to be such a religious school (when I am not). I know some schools are religious and you would have no idea unless someone told you... and other schools are to the extreme where religion is a part of every class.

Does anyone know the degree to which this school is religious?
Thanks :)

So stoked, just got the interview invite call! I will be there on the 24th... cannot wait!

the medical college is separate form the undergrad institution. You are right in that the undergrad degree requires religious classes, but the medical school will be focused on medicine and medicine only. No religious classes, or religious undertones. I asked at my interview :)
