So Metformin causes weight loss while sulfonylureas and glitazones cause weight gain. Why is this? They all cause either increased insulin sensitivity or increased insulin release, so it can't be because of insulin right?

I can't speak to why the sulfonylureas and glitazones cause weight gain, but as for metformin's weight loss, I've always been told that is simply suspected to be due to the very common GI side effects (vomiting and diarrhea are a pretty surefire way to lose weight).
