Do MD PhD programs actually care about the type of research you've done

I've been doing research for the past 2 years at a lab that is well known in it's field and is trying to develop new therapies. Say for applying to MD PhD programs, does the type of research actually matter and can it help during the admissions process?
Is there also a way to indicate on the school's II which labs you would like to work in?
