I have never taken Xanax, but it is the single most popular benzodiazepine in the US, with 49 million prescriptions per year in the last IMS Health report. That is almost double the runner up, Ativan, with 27 million scrips.

I shadowed a Family Medicine doctor, and his patients always wanted Xanax, and he would either give them Xanax or not give them a benzo at all.

But talking to psychiatrists, you would think Xanax was invented by Satan and contains his demonic powers of addiction and sin. But many psychiatrists think other benzos are a-okay, if used appropriately.

What gives? Do you think Xanax is categorically different than other benzos, or do you think it is just slightly more prone to abuse for some reason?
