First impressions mean something. Certainly, you wouldn't want to leave a terrible impression with the professionals that you plan to represent.

Today, during our first week of medical school, along side with Physician round tables and a head of public health speaker, we had our first and only AMA representative speak. His subject was solely Disability insurance. Not rallying together with other physicians or students to fight mid level encroachment. Not to exchange ideas or give hope for our future, but to sell us disability insurance.

Thank you for the great impression AMA. Its no wonder so many people are a part of your wonderful organization.

No offense, but you're in your FIRST WEEK of medical school. You don't have the experience, the knowledge, or anything else to fight mid-levels. Have you even had your first med school lecture yet? The first week is all about getting students settled and doing red-tape things like insurance -- and yes, even disability insurance in some cases.

You'll get to put on your boxing gloves and fight mid-levels soon enough. For now, it's beyond your scope.

I was just expecting an AMA rep to speak on behalf of AMA, not sell me insurance.

It's not like you have a choice anyway. Buying disability insurance is mandatory for us and it's through some other third party. Just gets added to our bill although we did have a speaker during orientation too.

I imagine you will be hearing from your AMA-MSS officers soon enough to recruit you to join. For us, they waited until around the 2nd week of classes because they realized our brains were exploding from info overload anyway. That's because they did what you are doing last year and understand how overwhelming the beginning is.

However, not all schools have an AMA-MSS chapter--if so, maybe you can start one at yours!
