Hi friends,

If I were in ur shoes I would have taken USC without a second thought.I feel one should be through with the clinical work for which we r paying more than 150K and this is best possible in USC(considered for the highest income from the dental patients in the westcoast)and post grad chances are the same from both(and we don`t know how things are gonna be with us after two good years).
I am waitlisted in USC and I think I should not suggest u this but thats the truth :)

goodluck with ur schools

Hi,
The point u mentioned is absolutely right. But i have a point which u all might not know. One day per week in the first year and 4 days per week in the second year, all UCSF IDP student will spend at Buchanon Dental Hospital which is only for IDP. That hospital is used to be for GPR and AEGD program students and UCSF has no more of those programs and only IDP will enjoy all the incentives of that. At Buchanon, u will have assistants( Not for procedures like scaling and root planning) and scheduling is done by the front office and less paper work.

I am not here to support UCSF or degrade some other school, but i think both are good schools and i personally feel u shouldnt base ur decision between USC and UCSF on patient pool for IDP. U can consider other apects and decide.

All the best

Hi, international. I always thank you for your dedication to this forum.

I have a question here.
As you mention, I heard that there are enough patient pool to practice.
But , do you think that there are many opportunities for researches, etc to prepare post-graduate study in UCSF?
In the interview, I heard that the school life is too busy to prepare residency like having a research experience. And some of candidates in the interview told me that that will not be good for the further education.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

hi everybody, i got my acceptence letter a day before yesterday. i had lost the hope because many got admission before a week. i am excited and relieved. congrates to all those who are accepted and those who are still waiting , please don`t lose hope.

Hi,
I think if u want to do some research, i dont think u will find any other school better than UCSF, but once after joining the program, i didnt see many who is very much in to research. I know that i cant generalize this to all. But it doesnt mean, u wont have time to participate in research, u will have atleast one session per week as the ISO(Independent Study Option) where u can do what ever u want i.e., either research or something else like    . And i think in the second year u will more then one session per week as ur ISO. So it is upto you to decide what u wanna do. U can take up patients in those days if the chairs are available.
"And some of candidates in the interview told me that that will not be good for the further education" I didnt understand what u meant by this.

All the best and i suggest you all not to decide ur opinion based on what i tell or what it is posted, cos i might be very much biased as i am a student here.

I think u got me

Hi naina,

I don`t know if I can help you with ur question.Surely International can put in better words.

The fee in UCSF is more than USC and also the SF living is expensive.
My friends in UCSF tell me that the loan(for living)is hardly enough for them though the public transport is good.If u live near the school then the housing is expensive.
so totally the figures become too biiiiiiiiiiiiiig(This is what I hear from them always).

goodluck with ur admission.

Hi solafied,
I think UCLA is world renouned for research etc.The dept of periodontics has the greatest people like DR.CARRANZA and DR.NEWMAN and the same is with all the other departments also.
I wish I could join UCLA...anyways will wait for my turn.

All the very best..

Hi international,
I am sure u r a student of UCSF and its obvious that u will love ur school :D .
But I think alL the california schools are equally good and UCLA is the best for research and cheaper than UCSF and USC will mould one to a very good professional.UCSF is also a very good school but one can`t say its the best.
UOP is very professional school and regular students get to do all kinds of cases as there is no recidency in most of the departments and the best to start up own practice as soon as u are out.
:luck: friends.

Hi Dr pulp,
As u said all the CA schools are very good and i am accept that every school has some -ve and +ve points too. No school is perfect. It is upto you, what u want in life and during DDS and what u want to do after DDS. If some one wants to go for Specialties, I feel u dont even need to think about the patient pool in DDS cos, once u become specilaist, u will concentrate only in that area. So i feel UCLA and UCSF and some others are good. But if u right away want to go for practice, i think u might not be competent if u r from UCLA, this info, i got it from UCLA students. But as u said it is one of the world renowed school and i agree absolutely. I heard the experience at UCLA is not enough to make you competent, this i heard from UCLA students and i dont know with what school they compared themselves

Whether the UCSF is the best or some other school, i cant give what the world thinks, but i GAVE MY OPINION.Coming to the UOP, i think it is a great school, cos it is the oldest program and very well organized program. Experice does matter. But it is little costlier.

So i feel it is always a balance of things which makes u decide where u want to do and what u want to do.

If u ask me what is the best school to do DDS if u dont mind money, then
the naswer is ......UOP i think. Cos it is the oldest program and very well organized program. Experice does matter. But it is little costlier.

Hi international,
I totally agree that UOP is best for DDS

Hi Ann,
'Near the school'.....I meant living close to school in sfo or somewhere around.
Obviously school housing is cheaper to off campus.

I would advise every one not to believe any of the self proclamations here and do proper research yourself to find which one suits you the best. The best way to do that is to find a way to talk to reliable contacts at these schools. See how happy they are where they are. Find out what the problems they face are. And the Pros and Cons analysis on which one best fits your requirements. There is nothing like best school for DDS. Thats all crap. For Eg., a school like UCLA or UCSF might not relatively be a best fit for some one who wants to be the best clinician as the emphasis there is more research and theory and less patient and clinical exposure. But they would be best if some one wants to pursue a career in teaching or reserach. On the other hand UOP and USC are known to prepare the best clinicians for practice but may not be best fit for some one who wants to do research.,etc.

So do your math and decide on whats best for you. For eg., some one I know settled for a school based on the place. Her sole criterion was to stay closer to her husband's work place in San Jose despite her heart was to go for a clinical school. And she is OK with the decision. Also look for statistics like how many people from the waitlist were confirmed last few years. If that number is too high find out why so many people are dropping. Answers to all these questions as well as how confortable you felt when you were at these schools for interviews might help in picking up the best choice that fits your bill. Good Luck.

Hi,
I was reading my own message again and i felt i mis typed some part. I accept that UOP is one of the best and i dont have much knowldge to judge whether IT IS THE BEST.But if u want to specialise, again the ball game changes. From my point of view, what i know and what i want and what i am getting, my school is lot better than many schools in USA. But this is just my opinion. I have to ask my collegues what they think about this.   I think it is how u think and what u want.

These are all individual opinions, and there will be lot of bias in these and i dont think we have such a vast information of judging them as what we see is Just the tip of the Iceberg. There are so many things to be considered which we r not even aware of.

All the best to you all

very well said.Decisions should be based on their own math.
Finance, place, cost of living, patient pool, research etc etc everything maters.
I would choose on patient pool for a better clinical exposure as I dont know how things are gonna change with me after 2 years from now with lots of loan on my head.

Dr.Pulp,
May be that's probably why there is so much competition to get into UOP/USC and have more people withdrawing from UCLA/UCSF admissions as many seem to have Clinicals and Patient exposure as high on their priorities. But surely it is individual decision and needs to live with it for life time. Some of the criteria that is common are the following and not in this order as the priorities order change with each individual
1) Patient Pool
2) Clinical and Practical exposure
3) Geographical proximity (like a school near by)
4) Strong Alumni Network (Like if lots of people from that school is practicing it will be easy to get recruited as well as help going forward)
5) Total Money spent on two years
6) Reserach and PG opportunities
7) Confidence to go into practice (without going into AEGD programs) coming out of school
8) School neighborhood and weather conditions
9) Age of the programs as old programs may be more structured and refined
10) Most importantly how happy the current students are about their program and any specific complaints they may have
11) Ability to reach faculty when needed and their readiness to help

Good Luck

Hi,

I am trying to answer exam papers of previous years, and want to get a hang of where i am standing of NDBE part1. If i am able to answer approximately 78% whare am i standing?
Any input would be appreciated.
BTW congrats to those who got admissions.

thanks in advance.

hey guys,
dose anyone know if we have to show complete 2 yrs of tuition along with living expenses to obtain an I-20 in UCSF?
or we just have to show one year expenses?
from last year's threads it seems that in BU,upenn u have to show 1 yrs expenses...
I wanted to know about UCSF....
also how much time does it take for them to give us an I-20 after we are done with the required paper work etc?
any info will be helpful...
Thanks...

Hi starwars,
I think they expect you to show 2 years fee for getting I-20 and i think i did show them too. But i am not sure how picky they are on that issue. As ucsf is a cool school and once one student couldnt pay the fee for a quarter due to the various reasons and they have given permission, not to pay for a quarter it seems. So i dont think nothing wrong in throwing a stone and see what happens if u cant arrnage the finances.

Hi,
I think living near UCSF might cost u a max of $1000 per month at the max. But how much u need really depends, how u wanna live, and whether u want to cook or u want to have food daily outside and so many factors. But my quote of $1000 is too much, but i am giving the max, if u wanna stay shared with some one or live in a studio. I THINK my friends spend less than what i am saying those who stay near UCSF school.

thanks a lot international...
ur info is very helpful.....
when did u graduate from ucsf......or r u still doing the program?
I havent yet taken my part-2...so I wanted to ask if ucsf prepares u for part-2 etc.....or do they have any part-2 review session?
Thanks....

regarding showing of 2 yr expenses to get the I 20, is it ok if we show some property back home in india as proof tht we can support ourselves for 2 yrs or does it have to be liquid assets or property and liquid assets in the US?
