Help Me Decide: UC Davis v New Mexico

New Mexico
Pros

• 60K in loans. Much much cheaper cost of living.
• Lived there in the past so not new to the area which will make adjusting to the environment easier.

Cons

• Away from support systems.
• Lesser known and not a lot of grads from NM marching outside the state.

UC Davis
Pros

• 2-hour drive from my partner, friends and support systems
• Relatively easier to match on the west coast region.

Cons

• 200K in loans, major con for me

Summary: Currently tossing between pediatrics and ophthalmology but keeping an open mind for med school. Low-income so I really need to be able to justify taking on that much debt.

I would go for New Mexico, UC Davis isnt very highly ranked and the debt difference is massive

The match lists that I have found through Google that are still available show quite a number of UNM grads who match out of state. If you are debt-sensitive, take the lower amount of debt if you are confident the student culture is inclusive and affirming.
