how to apply to internal prelim and categorical at the same hospital?

I want to apply to PM&R so I need an internal prelim year, but I also want to apply to an internal categorical as a back up. Can I apply to both prelim and categorical positions in the same hospital program? Would that look bad? How would I explain it to the program directors?

More commonly, people just apply to prelim spots. Ask on your interviews what the potential is to stay on in an advanced position if your career interests changed. Most programs will accommodate that sort of transition. I would not apply to prelim and categorical in the same institution.
