Hello! I'm not a physician and don't claim to be. I only say that because some people are against nurse practitioners, which I totally understand, but I'm posting on this physician forum because most people who study addiction psychiatry seem to be physicians so you might have the best answer for me.

I'm a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I'm planning to work clinically at least 5 years then go back to school to research addiction psychiatry.

My question is - how? I understand it will be a huge financial hit to go back to school so I want to be efficient. PhD in neuroscience, public health, nursing PhD or DNP, some kind of fellowship? In your settings, how have you seen NPs get involved in research?

Do you have any recommendations for ways to prepare in the meantime?

Thank you!

Don't forget that there are now new Addiction Medicine Fellowship programs that start in 2019 that are looking to do research. They could be good starting points for collaboration.
