Im am a Texas resident, I will graduate next spring and am curious to know what a low gpa such as a 3.4 with a 31 mcat will do for me. I dont have many ec's, they include about 50 hours of shadowing, I helped clean up during the hurricanes Ike and Katrina awhile back, about 60 hours worth, and sadly won intermurals in every sport since freshman year. I am an African American with a pretty good story. Please be honest and thank you, any advice is awesome !

Apply to all 8 of the Texas schools plus Meharry, Moorehouse and Howard. I think you have a decent chance of at least one acceptance. If you look at the graph for African American applicants with your GPA and MCAT score your chances of at least one acceptance is greater than 80%. Also consider applying to at least 12 DO schools . Your chances of an acceptance to a DO school should be even higher.

Don't need to apply to DO and don't even need to apply to HBCU unless you want to OP. You have a realistic chance at mid tier schools.
