My school does top 10%. How focused should I be on achieving the top 10% to set myself up for a surgical specialty like ortho, gen surg, etc.

It will help. It won’t be the end if you don’t have it, but with p/f step 1 I would try to be top of the class if you can

I was in the top 5% of my class. It was never mentioned at any of my interviews.

Never heard of gen surg being competitive relative to surgical subspecialties.

You can look up the PD rankings of different factors they care about for residency admission. Grades are always on the lower end. Step scores matter much more.

but more important than your research (at certain programs)
This essentially only applies to former DO programs. Since GS was mentioned I will say you should try to go to a former MD program and your research will be much more important than your rank
