Has anyone received interview offers yet? When are interviews traditionally offered?

From reading past posts, it seems most programs wait until after ASTRO to offer interviews. I guess that makes sense... before ASTRO, attendings and program directors are probably busy working on their posters and presentations. Then after the national meeting, they have more time to devote to applications. So hopefully, between 2-4 weeks from now, we will start hearing from programs.

Having said that, I know some interviews have been offered. Last year, people also talked about some interviews taking place as early as October! Perhaps we can start a list on programs that have already offered interviews (or interviews we have received)? This is the list I know so far:

--Stanford
--SUNY Buffalo
--Univ of Kansas

Anyone know of rejections that have been given?

Kaiser Sunset (Los Angeles) just sent out interview offers

just curious...did stanford send out an email, or did they leave phone messages?

Stanford emailed them out....best of luck to everyone! Lets keep this thread going!

UNC-Chapel Hill notified interviewees by e-mail.

Umiami rejection via email. darn.

List so far:

1) SUNY buffalo
2) UNC Chapel Hill
3) Stanford
4) Kansas U.
5) Kaiser LA

Looks like the post-ASTRO theory is shaping up...hope to hear soon! Good luck everyone!

Good job, guys. I've been striking out left and right so far...Doesn't bode well for the next few months. Guess I knew this was going to happen before I got started, but it's still a kick in the 'nads when it comes to fruition. I imagine I have numerous rejections still en route, though. So there's still hope! +pissed+

so... Clueless

Have you received actual rejections, or just haven't heard from places listed above? If rejections, would you mind listing schools that have sent out those letters/e-mails?

If you haven't heard anything from schools above, don't fret just yet. No news is still good news... maybe you turned in your application later than some people who've gotten interview offers? Maybe schools offer interviews in 2 or 3 or more batches? Maybe for some applicants, schools want to see the Dean's letter before making the final decision? gosh... who knows?

Best of luck! waitin' sucks :)

Just wanted to wish everyone best of luck in their application / interview process. Don't be discouraged by any little bad news, because your perseverence will be rewarded. Stay strong.

Hope to see you as my colleagues in the near future!!

1) UNC Chapel hill
2) Kaiser LA
3) Kansas
4) Stanford
5) Vandy
6) SUNY buffalo
7) U Miami
8) Fox Chase

These are only ones that people have heard from...that is all thats known...and as we've been told by the elder wiser ones before us, that doesnt mean that they have dealt all of their cards....

thanks cancer_doc!

Does anyone know of a "magic number" of interviews that assures a reasonably good chance of matching?

cancer_doc - thanks for the words of encouragement! This has got to be one of the most nerve-wracking times in recent memory; staying positive has got to be essential in not going crazy!

music710 - pretty much the places already listed by others. UNC and UofMiami have given me the wave-off. Haven't heard from elsewhere, but I can't imagine I have a mountain of interviews in the waiting. A few would do nicely, though!

RODOC - if there is such a thing as a "magic number" (which there isn't, by all accounts), I don't think anyone here would know what it is. Unless there is someone here who has been a Program Director for 10 years and keeps meticulous statistics on applications, etc. And if there is, by all means, fill us in!!!

Best of luck in the coming months, all! I'd like nothing more than to have you as colleagues in a few years!

Maybe not a "magic number" as such, but talking to faculty and current residents who have a bit of a feel for it, ranking 8-10 programs gives you a pretty reasonable shot of landing at one of them. Personally, I'd err on the high side of that (if I am fortunate enough to be able to!). That also may not take into account the caliber of programs you're ranking.

Dont take this as gospel, though. I seem to remember reading a thread on this board where a very good candidate ranked eight programs and fell through the cracks.

Anyway, good luck to all. I hope to be able to put some faces to names as we all hit the interview trail!

Wes

i interviewed at 14, ranked 12 programs as a med student and didnt match.

then as an intern, i interviewed at 8, and matched.

i had a friend who ranked 5 or 6 and got a spot.

there is no magic number. there is a higher liklihood of matching when you rank more programs, but i feel that in a competitive field as radonc, i dont think it holds true.

for example one of the programs interviewed at called me and told me they would rank me in the top 5 students (out of 40) for 2 spots. i trusted them (as i had done a rotation there, and there was no reason for them to lie). after it all happened, i didnt match. i called this program up, talked to the residency director and he told me he had ranked me 3rd, but that they had gotten their first 2 in the rank.

radonc, right now, is a field where the programs, not the applicants, hold the power.

Happily that little School House Rock ditty works here. I'd say I agree with G'ville with rad onc's qualifer that you really can't tell. Its like we tell patients: I can give you the stats but if your the 1 person in 100 who defies the odds, the populations stats mean nothing to you.

last year i applied to 25 programs, got 6 interviews and matched at my #3 choice.

i know of someone who applied to 35, interviewed at 3 and matched at her 1st choice.

remember: if you didn't pass your boards, never went to med school or never did a rad onc rotation, likely you can apply to every spot in the US and never get one. So you have to generally tailor your applications to your personal CV. However in rad onc right now, I think everyone needs to be aggressive. I've seen many folks from my institution who are great matching relatively low on their list.

Hello all, I'm new to this board, but was glad that it exists! I applied 2 years ago, didn't match, now applying again this year. Just wanted to know whether for this list below...which ones people have received rejections from and how?

1) UNC Chapel hill
2) Kaiser LA
3) Kansas
4) Stanford
5) Vandy
6) SUNY buffalo
7) U Miami
8) Fox Chase

I did interview at Kaiser and U Miami last time, so if anybody wants my opinion, shoot away.

1) UNC Chapel hill
2) Kaiser LA
3) Kansas
4) Stanford
5) Vandy
6) SUNY buffalo
7) U Miami
8) Fox Chase

9) MCVa - notified by mail

Thaiger - definitely, what's the scoop with those two

I didn't particularly like either Kaiser or Miami, even though they are arguably in one of the best cities. Kaiser had a panel interview in this closet sized room...would say it was one of the more tense ones...then again, most panel interviews are. Didn't think they were too courteous, but it could be b/c it was late in the interview season and they were getting tired...they kept grilling me on why I chose to apply there. The structure of the program was odd and was the major factor why I ranked it low. Instead of rotating on different services every 2-3 months, you're on different services on different days of the week, which sux if you're starting out and you don't know what's going on...and maybe good if you're a senior resident to help refresh things.

Miami was, I thought, weak. There were only 4 full-time faculty and I heard that it they had only 2 a few years back. Work load is light. They have 1 afternoon per week devoted entirely to reading. The residents were extremely nice. And the program director seemed sincere on improving the program. And did I mention it's not that far from South Beach? :)

If you know of any future interview dates offered by programs, please post them. This may help in scheduling the next few months.

whew! almost didn't apply to Hopkins because I heard it had only 1 day of interview (1/9) -- and I am out of the country. Very very glad that it may have 2-3 days.

friend of mine got U Chicago interview invitations today. so that makes the list #10 now?

keep 'em coming, y'all. and good luck to all.

Rush will have two interview dates -- 12/12 and 12/19

Steph,

If you know JHH interview dates can you/ will you please post them.

Joe

yes when I know them for sure.

I must add, its a BIG mistake not to apply to a place becauseof the interview days. Often they will make alternate arrangements for you and the field is far to glutted to cut off any avenue, even for the best of students. Good luck.

Emory has also offered interviews. As mentioned, UChicago and Rush did as well.

As of now, we expect to interview for acouple of days the weekend of Jan 10th with potentially a less formal available for a good applicatn who cant make it then the following week.

add Univ Wisconsin and Yale to the list today.

Wisconsin dates are: 11/24, 12/6, 1/10.

Yale: 12/4, 12/8, 1/5, 1/16.

would others care to share the interview dates of programs?

BTW, I am very appreciative that this thread is going strong. I'm still not hopeful that I will have any success in bunching regional interviews together, but without this info, I'd probably have NO chance. Keep it coming!

Wes

16. Univ Michigan 1/9 and "we can try to accomodate... another possible date"

Adding a couple more: Univ. Colorado (which I've heard from) and Univ. Florida (heard from a fellow applicant at UNC). Word on UNC, they should be interviewing another batch of applicants in December, so don't fret if you haven't heard from them yet. I will post my post-interview thoughts about UNC on a different post. This list is getting long! Kinda bummed that I haven't heard from some of these places, but I haven't gotten rejections either. How many of these places have people gotten rejections or heard about rejections?

1. UNC 11/8, 11/15
2. Kaiser LA
3. Kansas
4. Stanford 12/16
5. Vandy

16. Univ. Michigan 1/9, ?
17. Univ. Colorado 12/4, 12/11
18. Univ. Florida

Oh, U. Penn also (heard from fellow interviewee). Just another depressing note as well...someone told me that there are 12 people from the Harvard graduating class (that makes it 10% of their class!) going into Rad Onc. Joy.

2. Kaiser LA
3. Kansas

16. Univ. Michigan 1/9, ?
17. Univ. Colorado 12/4, 12/11
18. Univ. Florida
19. Univ. Penn

Overall, I liked the program. Strong program.
Good points:
1. Faculty are super super nice.
2. Teaching is superb there. Great one-on-one teaching.
3. Residents are very very happy there
4. Good research going on for the small size of the dept.
5. Very pro-resident. Residents have alot of say into their curriculum and faculty actually responds

Downsides (not much):
H&N is weak.

rejection from Fox Chase today, by snail mail. alas, can't win them all!

I think many of us are in a similar boat -- got a couple (or more than a couple) interviews, but not all of them on the list. Hard to tell on the ones we haven't gotten whether 1) no word means no hope (esp Fox Chase, interviewing in like a week or so), or 2) no word means we may be a "second batch" of interviewees, or wait-listed for interviews, or 3) programs just haven't read through all the applications yet. Probably all 3 scenarios are true at some places. In any case, waiting is totally anxiety provoking.

keep the posts coming!

Tufts came in the mail yesterday.

I've gotten no interviews, and a bunch of rejections. I'm rapidly losing hope...

Don't lose all hope yet. If it helps, I got interviews at late as mid-December the 1st time around....

Apparently it starts on a Friday afternoon, you go out with residents Friday night, then most of Saturday for the rest of the visit.

Before people panic, this came from a secretary who said interview invites should go out via ERAS on Monday.

MD Anderson came via e-mail.

i think someone also reported Tufts (via snail mail). So that's (?at least) 24 total thus far.

Things are definitely rolling fast. Now I spend a whole day on rotation, and can't wait to check my e-mail at the end of the day. Prelim programs also rolling-- makes this an exciting time. Oh, what does it mean when I haven't heard from some of these places yet?

Congrats for all the interview offers, y'all.

Hi -

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet - but I wanted to let you all know that last year it seemed to me that quite a few programs offered interviews on a rolling basis. I heard from programs later than other people did in some cases. Im sure that they are either just sending them out in batches based on how many applications they have reviewed or in some cases I think that multiple faculty pick the people that they want to be interviewed. I will say, however, that I felt like the places I heard from earlier were more interested, and the places I heard from later were less. But that was a pretty loose rule and Im not sure if there was any significance to how interested I felt like programs were anyway.

Anyway, just meant to say, rest assured that you haven't been rejected by these places just because other people have heard from them!

Good luck to all. Its a stressful process!
Ann
