Program Announcement: Mini Podiatric Medical School at Barry University
Location: Center for Community Health and Minority Medicine, 320 NW 115th Street, Miami, Florida 33168
To raise awareness of the field of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery and to encourage students to consider a career in podiatry, Barry University's School of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery is hosting a Mini Podiatric Medical School on October 15, 2011 from 1 to 5 P.M. This program consist of 1 1/2 hours of lecture followed by 2 hours of hands on experience concluding with a ½ hour talk on admissions to podiatry schools. The 2 hours of experience will consist of 8 stations each 15 minutes long. Each station will be run by a 3rd year podiatry student allowing you to interact directly with podiatry students.
Program Topics and Timeline
• Introduction to Podiatric Medicine and Surgery
• Overview of first year of Pod School
• Overview of second year of Pod School:
• Overview of clinical rotations
BREAK
Each student will experience the following stations:
1. Vital Signs: learn to measure the temperature, pulse, respiratory rate and blood pressure
2. Anesthesia : intubate the larynx of a simulator and learn to inject soft tissues using needles
3. Radiology: learn about radiology and view interesting x-rays of feet and ankle injuries
4. Orthopedics: learn to make a foreleg / foot cast for treating a fracturedo
5. Biomechanics: learn to make a mold of a foot
6. Surgery: learn to tie square knots and surgical knots using a knot tying board
7. Surgery: surgically remove an ingrown toe nail
8. Surgery: learn to suture wounds using a needle holder, forceps and suture

This program will be taught by Ira S. Rubin, M.D., Ph.D. The program is a community service. There is no fee to attend. However, you must register to attend.
