Socialism has been tried and it sucks. Capitalism has its flaws but it's the best thing we have.

Capitalism was perfect for a hands on industrial growth..... Now and soon much of the hands on industry will be robotics.... The only place to work will be research, service industries( including legal, food services, and other areas catering to people people interaction), construction, healthcare, cooking, day care.....

Things are changing fast, and if the wages don't keep up then..... It will be an issue for the government, and those living on the minimum....

All about the money is not the best, for being the first reason to choose an occupation.... It should be second....

The first reason to choose an industry/occupation should be.... Will I serve the greater good for the society around me by dedicating my self in this occupation.....

Is it immoral that many of us have to pay upwards of 500k to get an education?

I think it's certainly one of the reasons but if money is the only thing you care about, dentistry/medicine is way too much unnecessary work. A lot of people do it for the prestige as well, ya know, doing honorable work for which you are appropriately compensated... But that is an issue of social conditioning and will always be the case. If you like money but don't like doing technical work and serving the people, you should consider business/entrepreneurship. There is always poker if you have what it takes haha

Stalin, is that you???

Sorry, but none of what you say is even close to reality as far as what jobs will be available in the near future.

I don't think its necessarily within the scope of morality, and thus amoral. It is more of how you value your own time and what you wish to get out of life. If you're not becoming a dentist for the love of the profession, you will be very unhappy because it is difficult and stressful. Like others have said, many other careers pay the same or better for less education and technical skills. Obviously the pay is a perk, but with the loans we will be paying back plus interest for dental school (for the next 10-15 years of our lives after graduation), I think the pay is completely appropriate for the training given.

Be prepared to answer this question in interviews. I have a few friends that were asked if "dentists are overpaid" at a couple schools.

Jobs will continue to evolve and won't be stuck in the categories you stated. They have been talking about robots taking over assembly work for years and while there are some, they still aren't independent beings and need semi-skilled and skilled workers to command and operate the machinery. There will be jobs out there at all levels that we can't even imagine yet because technology and needs will evolve with time. Heck 40 years ago the thought of sitting in your living room with a computer on your lap surfing the "net" was only something you saw in cartoons...and not even then.

What was wrong with my post to tooth knockn? He applied to two schools where his DAT was below the lowest score they have accepted the past few cycles. He wasted his money, trying to white knight for him doesn't change that. I think it's cute you're trying to watch over him, but instead of blowing smoke up his ass try being honest with him. He stands no chance at Columbia or Penn with a 17 AA/3.2 GPA. That's not a high horse, it's statistics.

Dank meme though.
Oh, I wasn't kissing anyone's behind. There's a difference between being realistic and helpful, and being rude by saying things like, "You applied to [insert elite school here], just lol." You saying "just lol" is laughing at his supposed "stupidity" for applying to a school he probably doesn't have a chance at. Not only does it not concern you since he didn't ask for help, but that's impolite and useless. It's not helpful, it's just mean. High horse indeed.

And OSUKid, I have a boyfriend, but I appreciate the gesture :p:rolleyes::)

I love how this thread has evolved from "is it bad for someone to go into dentistry for the money" to "CAPITALISM IS Bad!!!"

My message was realistic and helpful, even if you also found it mean. Of course I am laughing at him - someone that spends as much time as he does on a predental forum posting complete garbage should at least know the very basics of what schools he has a realistic chance at before wasting his time and money applying. You don't have to be polite to be realistic. Get over yourself, the kid's reach exceeded his grasp and someone had to tell him.

Please try more ad hominem attacks though, it was very relevant to my discussion that had nothing to do with tooth knockn. It's sad that half the posts you make on this forum are either attacking other users and/or DAT Bootcamp (which you seem to hold a suspicious grudge against), or just being pretentious overall. High horse indeed.

If you insist on discussing this completely off-topic matter any further, I suggest you PM me instead. This thread is clogged up enough without your pointless personal attacks and whining.

Very demeaning.

Statistically speaking Penn and Columbia do have higher accepted DAT scores, obvious, Adea handbook.

But so what. My money my time, so you can go ......

Yourself, should be re analyzed

The issue is not that your DAT score is (significantly) lower than their average. It's that your 17 AA is lower than even the lowest score that either of those schools accepted last cycle. Put simply: you are completely outside of their acceptable range, not just on the low end of it. There is a difference between "low chances might as well give it a shot" and "no chance".

But so what. My money my time, so you can go ......

"But I can waste my money anyway, so there!" You are certainly free to do so, and I am free to comment on what a waste it is.

Yourself, should be re analyzed

Nevermind, your ability to communicate will surely win them over. You're the man, tooth knockn!

Tell you the truth I havent read one post that is more than one line. But I think almost all people become dentists for a secure career with a good pay, and to work in a field related to science and medicine. So no it is not immoral to have a career and hope to be well compensated, it just makes no sense. This is a dumb question in my opinion.

Oh god, I hate wasting my time on jerks like you who are hypocrites. I simply didn't like Bootcamp and I actually spend most of my time on this forum answering questions and being helpful because I get at least two messages a day requesting my help with DAT material. You, on the other hand, spend time judging others for their choices. Who asked you? Being helpful is baseless if no one asked for your help. So when you think your "help" is more valuable to input even when it's not needed/asked for, it means that you think your words should be held in higher regard than they actually are. You can judge tooth knockn' all you want for his choice, but to input it in a harsh way is a whole new ball game. I don't need to defend myself, but I will defend others who don't deserve harshness. Bye.

I'm not going to respond to anything you actually said, I'm just going to whine more about you being mean. I get two messages a day! I can't be judgmental!

So much easier than ranting for a paragraph about nothing.

Hide the DAT materials too, tooth knockn needs an excuse to continue bombing the DAT. Perhaps if you spent less time on here making poorly written posts and more time on improving your academic skills, you'd actually score well enough to get into dental school.

Man, I'm getting you worked up, aren't I. I should probably stop -- don't want you to be mean to everyone else for no reason. Pardon my French, everyone.

You're the one continuing to derail the thread by starting a discussion completely unrelated to it. I wouldn't worry about a douche though - if you just close your legs, the room will stop smelling like fish.

It's okay, @tooth knockn, don't pay attention to people like him. Anyone who is that worked up about someone else's decisions is too miserable in their own life and needs to divert. Okay I'm out! Gonna go enjoy the sun :D
