Hey guys,

I need some honest advice.

I am currently a junior at a Texas school (w/ residency). My goal is to apply to this coming cycle spring 2024. BS Biology My stats are 3.66 GPA 3.43s :/, which I think is 3.73/3.57 on TMDSAS, 508 MCAT . 1900h of clinical hours (half nursing assistant, half ER scribe), 150h of volunteering (homeless shelter, middle school tutor and hospital), with a summer research internship at a T20 medical school. AA, URM if it matters. Are my stats OKAY? not really interested in a competitive speciality or should I wait till senior year.

Your stats are fine. Make sure you get at least 50 hours of shadowing by application time. I recommend the following schools - remove those that you don't want to attend and cut it down to 25-30 schools depending on how top-heavy you want to apply. Make sure to keep Texas schools + a few HBCUs.

Stats look good, but you can use more nonclinical volunteering, especially shelter work or adding 50 hours of other service orientation activities like food distribution, housing rehabilitation, job/tax preparation, or transportation services.

Have you connected with any mentoring organizations for Black physicians like SNMA?

TX residents typically should not try applying to most OOS schools. Most schools know from the past that it is usually too difficult to beat the cheap in-state tuition unless there is something special they can offer.

I suggest:

All of TMDSAS
TCU
Tulane
Charles Drew
Howard
Meharry
Morehouse
IU

Thank you for your suggestion. In whole honesty, I would prefer an HBCU than any Texas school but that OOS tuition , yikes.
