Need Step 3 prior to applying?

Do you need to take Step 3 or the score prior to applying for cards fellowship or can you take it in interview season? Does this put you at a disadvantage (i.e. do you get screened out by various programs for not having taken it)? Last time this question was asked was in 2013, wanted to see if things had changed since then (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/need-step-1-2-and-3-to-apply.984672/)

I didn't take mine till the spring of 3rd year and I didn't feel it impacted my application at all but I suppose the places who might have cared did not offer me interviews, so it's hard to know for sure. Why don't you ask the cardiology program director at your current institution how he/she feels about it?
