I don't know about VCU being picky, but I also heard UMD being very picky as well.
What was your stats like if you don't mind me asking?
Did it improve over the course of 2~3 years?

Don't get your hopes up too high. A lot of us who submitted early got that email in August, only to receive another email a couple weeks ago saying that our app still hasn't been reviewed. This process, as if you didn't know, is a huge test your patience. I'm still waiting on 13 schools....
