Just a quick question about naming. What do you do in cases where the letters up to a certain point are the same. It's kind of hard to articulate what i'm saying so an example would be (1-methylethyl) versus methyl. What comes first in the name? I preferentially use common names since it's easier but i dont wanna get curve balled with a question that would require me to know this.

I am pretty sure you always use alphabetical order there - specifically of the whole substituent, not just the first letter.

Methyl would come before methylethyl.
