Pathology 2011-2012, Who's in?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't quite know the format of posting, but here are my stats:

Step 1: 215
Step 2CK: pending
GPA: 3.45
3 away rotations at Top Tier Pathology Programs

***Not that impressive, but I'm hoping that my Step 2CK score is higher and that my LoR (written by "known pathologists") reinforce my love of pathology!!

You're gonna do great!
Thanks

Step 1: 240
Step 2CK: 259
Step 2CS: Will take 10/4 (Hope to keep my clinical interviewing skills up for the next 3 weeks!)

I did a PSF in '09-'10, so I'm in a different class than when I started. So, I don't know exactly where I am rank-wise, but should be in the running for AOA (final vote is the end of the month). We don't do GPAs. No research since undergrad, but I've done a lot of teaching and outreach during med school and my PSF (e.g., teaching anatomy workshops and animal dissections to Jr. High and HS students).

Hi all,

Count me in as well. I am an old IMG. Step1 99/231, Step2 CK awaiting scores, CS Pass. Have a PhD and some postdoctoral research experience. Have 1 LOR from a US pathologist. Applied to Path programs on Sept 2. No interviews yet, One rejection. Do I stand a chance?

Thanks

Depends. Before I answer your question. Let me say, I am also a FMG who graduated 9 yrs back, Step 1 225, CK 189, CS pass, Step 3 199. PhD from a US university. Couple of good publications. 1 LOR from US pathologist, 3 weeks observership in Pathology. I have applied to most US universities that do not have strict score cutoffs for Step 2 and some University-based community hospital. From my prior correspondence with several programs, 80% of the universities that responded, did so very favorably. Other 20% responded negatively, mostly because of my Step 2 scores. Since, that's not an issue for you, I am guessing you are going to get several interviews if you have good publications and if your PhD is from a decent US university. Hope that answers your question.

My status so far, 1 rejection (from University-based community hospital) which I was expecting anyway. And 1 out-of-match offer. No interview calls yet through ERAS. Several programs I contacted said that they are not going to send out interviews until October or November, but did say they will likely call me for interview. Just so you know.

Thank you Retrovirologist. That is quite reassuring. I haven't taken my Step 3 yet. Planning to take it end of Oct/Nov.
Reading this forum and looking at candidates getting interview calls, I was starting to worry why I hadn't heard from any. If the programs are gonna call for interviews from Oct onwards, then I am happy to wait. Thanks.

Just wondering if those of you who are getting interviews also sent all your LORs? I'm going to submit tonight or tomorrow but still waiting on 2 LORs. I will submit w/o them but should I also include the LORs that I already have or send all the LORs at once?

I think it is best to submit LORs that you already have. If u hv already entered the name of ur letter write, the Programs know you have 2 more due sometime soon.

I'm still missing one LOR. I only had one in when I submitted.

3 of my 4 pan-assigned LORs are uploaded to ERAS--I'm giving the author her 3-week "gentle reminder" email either tomorrow or Friday. I don't know if this will prevent certain programs from inviting me to interview (as I have an "incomplete application"), but it doesn't seem to have affected me too much so far.

:luck: G'luck to all waiting for LORs, Step scores, and interview invites! :luck:

Thanks! Ive worked hard so I have a choice (at least more of a choice) where I go
It looks like you are raking in the interviews now.
Good Luck as well!

Question for those of you who have 4 letters. Are you sending all 4 letters to the programs you are applying to or only those who say up to 4 or dont specify? I ask because I have 4 and really want to submit all of them, but most of the programs I applied to say 3.

Depends on how good your 4 letters are. if u r confident that all 4 r good just send them in!
if not - choose the 3 best ones.

@The alchemist:
I finilized my 4 LOR slots even when I was waiting 2 LORs.
I meant, I applied and submited 4 LORS to each program (2 of them not uploaded to postoffice). On Sept 1st or 2nd, I saw programs had downloaded my papers and that LOR slot still said: Not uploaded to the Post-office.
Once my last LOR arrived I read this: Not yet retrieved (by programs)
Finally all my LORs are scanned, uploaded and downloaded by all the programs :)

@Deucedano:
What I've understood is that we are allowed to send 4 LORs, even if program wants to have only 3 to make judgement on you. I suspect more than 4 is not bad at all, just the opposite.

Hmmmm...Should I be worried that I haven't received any word either way from anybody yet? Submitted Sept. 5, 2 LOR's still waiting on but they've been mailed by the writers. It's just a question of whether or not they made it to my school's Careers Office yet.

Not at all. Invitations aren't sent out all at once. It's still SO early!

Yay!!! I'd update the list, but I can't do so from my phone.

Thank Gawd I'm not the only overly-paranoid one here about this.

Sincere congratulations to all who have received interview offers so far, and here's to there being plenty more for us where those came from!:xf:

As a penance for being Worrywart of the Century, I promise not to look at my ERAS mailbox/document tracking for 24 full hours! Lol, I'd promise 48 but that might just be too much. Who's with me?

They haven't downloaded mine either.

+1 on this. They haven't retrieved mine either.

I applied to about 30 programs including many who have given out interviews already on 9/6 and have not heard anything yet. I hoping it is because I only have 1 LOR in and it's not from a pathologist. Unfortunately my 2 pathology letters may not be in until mid-October as I'm finishing up my path rotation now. I have step 1 >265, AOA, and almost all honors M1-M3.

Glad to know I'm not the only one being paranoid. It's just exciting yet nerve-wracking all at the same time! I have 1 invite so far, and another program who will start reviewing complete apps (minus mspe) on oct. 3. I've also applied to several of the programs that have given out invites and I'm hoping I'll be in the next batches. I wonder if it has to do with date/time of when you submitted, as I did on 9/1 but later in the evening. I have 2 LORs in (both pathologists) and waiting on 1 more. I assigned 4 to programs, but I think 1 has been lost to the wind. Everything else shows up in ERAS, so now it's just a waiting game...
Congrats on the invites so far!

I am with you! fingers crossed! The wait is getting too stressful - maybe coz I am not sure when the bulk of interview invites are sent out.

Glad to know I'm not the only one being paranoid. It's just exciting yet nerve-wracking all at the same time!

Absolutely agreed. Exciting and stressful because we cannot do a single thing about it. And my husband, a software developer, keeps telling me "If you're so worried about it, call the programs"

Makes my day.
