hmmm...any idea what we are supposed to know about this, the information i have found is pretty detailed.

are they the same thing?

no idea what you are referring to. never came up on any of my practice material or AAMC test or real test. so, my guess is that you dont need to much detail at all.
 
Not that either of the above posters care about this 6 years later but, if anyone else sees this and cares to comment, did AAMC misspell branchial and pharyngeal or are these (below) alternate spellings?

From the evolution section of the biology content outline:

"B. Comparative Anatomy
1. Chordate features
a. notochord
