I shadow a orthodontist for half a year, but most of things I observed were fillings and making crowns. Sometimes, I observed root canal procedures, wisdom tooth extraction, implants and gum recession treatment. So, in the application, I put general dentist, and I was gonna ask people about what I should put. Now, after I submitted, I start to think about it again. If I need to change that, let me know! Thanks!

Am I missing something here? Orthodontists don't do those procedures.

General dentists do fillings and crowns, the occasional RCT and EXT. Ortho rarely. He sounds more like a GP than an ortho.

Yeah, that's what I usually observe, so I just put it in my ps... But he is an orthodontist for sure. Now I am wondering if I should call AADSAS to change "general dentist" to "ortho"

Yeah, the procedures you listed are typically done by a general.
That's why I put general on my application, but now I am confused about whether I should call to change "general" to "ortho"

I searched online, but I am not sure if this is right.
"In fact, most general dentists simply refer all of theirorthodontics cases to an orthodontist. It all comes down to what a general dentist enjoys doing. Some general dentists do lots of root canals, others do lots of braces, and others refer all of their patients that require root canals or braces treatment."
So, it says that as long as he is a general dentist, he can do a lot of procedures.

You're saying he is a both a general dentist and an orthodontist, which makes no sense.

Yeah, I guess so....
I am not sure if this is right. He is both a general dentist and an orthodontist because he got the certificates for both? So he can do both?

Dude are you trolling or what? Do you even know what orthodontist is? Technically yes he got his certificates in both but he can't do both if he advertises himself as an orthodontist. That goes for any specialty.

Yeah, I just found online about this... I need to call AADSAS tmr to change this. Thanks!

You said you put in the application that you shadowed a general dentist, and the things you described that you observed was a general dentist so not sure you need to change anything. If you shadowed an orthodontist that was doing root canals and wisdom tooth extractions, you need to call the ADA to report them, but I have a feeling this guy wasn't an orthodontist.

Yeah you are right, I just asked him. He just took a lot of continuing programs in the past. He did not specialize in it.... Sorry about that...

Dude shouldn't be marketing himself as a specialist but that's another issue. Glad you got it figured out for the app.

come on guys, go easy on the OP,

the dentist I shadowed is a true Orthodontists, went to Loma Linda for dental school, went to Loma Linda for orthodontic specialty, did not advertise himself as orthodontists, but rather general practice of fillings, crowns, treatments, and ORTHODONTICS.

so I shadow an orthodontics but he spent 90% of his time doing general procedures ( Root canals, crowns, implants, fillings, deep cleaning).

sometimes an orthodontics has to do general due to lack of ortho patients. and it seems like many orthodontics in this saturated area (South CA, Orange County) still do general work and just do orthodontics when patients need and YES, THEY GRADUATE FROM ORTHO SPECIALTY, not from CE ortho

I thought that once you specialize, you are limited to that scope of practice? Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.....

Ethically, if you advertise yourself as a specialist, you should avoid doing GP work.
But if you do GP work as a specialist and advertise yourself as a specialist, chances are you'll lose a lot of referrals from other GPs (unless you're from a small town and you're the only dentist). The dental community is small.
Lastly, most specialists won't want to do GP work unless they're starving dentists... Specialists get to charge specialist fees for their specialist procedures so if that procedure isn't specialist related: it'll be a waste of time since you could have gotten more compensation doing other procedures.

Bear in mind this varies state-by-state.... for example, you must limit your scope of practice in states like Ohio and Nevada by law.

Yeah you can do a residency and not advertise yourself as such, but the op made it sound like the guy he/she shadowed was advertising himself as an orthodontist and doing gp work. I think the bigger issue is that the op doesn't (or didn't) know the difference in a general dentist and an orthodontist and is applying for dental school. I can understand someone not knowing what a periodontist or an oral pathologist is exactly...but an orthodontist? Come on now

Yeah, I have to admit I didn't know that specialists can't do general once they advertise themselves as specialists, and I didn't know GP can legal do so many things that require specialities.

Yeah a gp can really do anything they want. The issue comes when they do a complex root canal or implant or braces they are held to the same standard as a specialist. You'll find out in school what you like to do and what you hate doing. Get good/fast at what you like, refer out what you don't like.
