Actually Gary not sure if you knew it but this is how UNC breaks down their ranking. You are never specifically told you are x out of 79 students in the class. They tell you by %, so you are either in the top 5%, top 10%, top 20%, top 40% etc. To some people this is a bit unfair IMO....if someone happens to fall say 20th out of 79 students, all their transcript will say is that they were in the top 40th %.
For me I never wanted to know where I stood because it would have created unnecessary stress. Do your best, it is out of your control what other people do. You should know within yourself if you are working hard enough by the grades you are earning and your satisfaction with that. I don't see why the grades of others matter.
For the 1st time I got my class rank last week, spring of 3rd year. I will be applying to PASS this summer and wanted to know where I stood, even though the final rank that counts is end of this summer (just get all As till then nothing changes
) Let's just say it was a good week for me
