I don't fulyl understand this concept. what exaclty is resonating through a pipe? If it's air pressure why isn't it relieved when it gets to the open end of the pipe? how does it reflect?

also does resonance in an instrument basically mean the frequency (and applied pressure) that an instrument requires to make its sound?

The wave does exit the pipe, but there is a continued input of energy to propagate the standing wave. This is why if you blow into a flute, the sound only continues if you keep blowing.

Resonance is a frequency that can be produced by an object as determined by it's physical structure and the speed of which a wave moves through it.
