Lets say you get a "C" in a 3 unit course. You retake and get an "A." This averages to a "B," but is it a "B" with 3 units or 6 units because you have taken 2 classes?

3 units at a C plus 3 units at an A = 6 units at a B. The credit hours accumulate as if it were 2 separate classes.

What about for osteopathic? Would it be the new grade over 1 course units or over the units of 2 courses?

For osteopathic it completely replaces your grade. It's just like on a school transcript if they allow you to retake with forgiveness, it often has an asterisk next to the lower grade (or higher depending on how they list it), explaining that this course has been retaken and the higher grade of the 2 is counting in the GPA. They do not count double credits. If it was a 3 credit class, and you took it 2 times, then it will be 3 credits at the higher grade. It would be highly unfair to weight something such as this 6 credits, because you would then be able to double-boost your GPA by first failing out of a course and then getting double gpa weight for an A when you took it seriously the next time.

Let's talk about how you mark coursework when you apply.

Say you take Chem 101 spring '09 and get a D. Then you take Chem 101 fall '10 and get an A.

On AMCAS:
- you list the D in your spring '09 courses and check the "repeated" checkbox
- you list the A in fall '10 and check the "repeated" checkbox
- on your report that goes to med schools, "repeated" courses are indicated in the "course type" column (along with pass/fail, incompletes, withdrawals etc), all are counted in GPA calcs

On TMDSAS (as of 2007-2008 app year):
- you list the D in spring '09 and say "N" for "last time taken"
- you list the A in fall '10 and say "Y" for "last time taken"
- on your report every course gets either an N or a Y, all are counted in GPA calcs

On AACOMAS (as of 2007-2008 app year):
- you list the D in spring '09 and designate it as "repeat 01"
- you list the A in fall '10 and designate it as "last repeat 01"
- on your report both courses are shown, with repeat designation in the "classification" column, and only the A is included in your GPA

Any questions at this time about whether computer science is math and whether math is science? Because that one is a hoot.
