In my interview at my home school, the PD offered to review and help me out with my rank list since he knows the programs in the geographical area we're in pretty well. He said he didn't mind being transparent about this and wouldn't take offense to me not ranking my school at the top. Is this a common thing to do or would you advise against?

Our PD gave us lists of programs to consider applying to, but didn't really offer to review rank lists.

That said, this comes down to how much you trust your home PD. If you believe he is genuine and won't move you up or down based on what he learns, then I would take the offer. He probably has a much better perspective on those programs than you might have been able to glean from your interview. Of course, if you think he's going to lower you on the rank list you should probably avoid.

I agree with the above. It depends on the relationship you two have formed.
