How practical is it to go into general pediatrics to start your own practice? How does it compare to Family practice and IM? And is it feasible to set up within 100 miles of a big city?

Also, what is the future of pediatric medicine? Do you see salaries being affected the way other specialties are?

I was under the impression that most general pediatricians go into private practice, while most specialists are in academic centers.

In terms of future salary, in order for a salary to take a hit, it must be high in the first place. Insurance companies see children as little people so little biils and little reimbursement. It would be hard to reimburse any less, but I guess anything could happen. I would imagine that if any specialties take a hit, it will be the high reimbursement fields, such as radiology, cardiology, anesthesiology.

Here is an article from the AAP regarding career planning.
