Hey everyone,

This is mostly targeted at Canadian citizens attending USMD schools and applying into neurology. Does anyone know whether your preliminary program AND your advanced neuro program both have to sponsor you for an H1b, or if it's just the advanced program? As far as I can tell, one should be able to complete the prelim year on the OPT status obtained from obtaining a US med school and then switch to H1b status for the advanced program, but I was hoping someone could confirm this for me. Thanks in advance!

Yes you will get OPT toward the end of your 4th year which allows you to work for your prelim year. Your residency program should start H1b visa application during your prelim year. Also as a side note, you can't practise medicine on a TN visa (resident or attending).
