When to F/U with programs of interest

Hi all,

Just wondering if people have thoughts about following up with programs you haven't heard from. Is it advised to send a quick email to inquire about the status of your application? Is there a certain date at which point it becomes acceptable? What if you will be in the area during a specific time, and would like to coordinate interviews if possible? I appreciate any input. Thanks.
