who writes UWorld questions exactly?

Are the UWorld question writers physicians? If so, how are they recruited? If they are not physicians (and potential writers for NBME), then how does UWorld know that the information they test with their question bank is appropriate preparation for USMLE examinations?

These are just some random thoughts that I've had over the past 3 years of my medical school education. Curious if anyone knows anything about UWorld; they seem far more opaque in the generation of their material than most of the other question banks I have used.
