Not sure if this was already posted, so I thought I'd share... It comes as no surprise, as York Hospital (in York, PA) has been a Level II Trauma Center for quite some time, and the acuity level is quite high - well above the national average. So the trauma & EM experience has been excellent.
York Hospital to be upgraded to Level 1 Trauma Center
One of only two in south central Pennsylvania
Effective October 1, York Hospital will be upgraded to a Level I Trauma Center from a Level II Trauma Center by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation.
Level 1 Trauma Centers require trauma research, a surgical residency program and an annual volume of 650 major patients per year.
In 2008, York Hospital cared for 1,903 trauma patients.
York Hospital is now one of only two Level 1 Trauma Centers in south central Pennsylvania and one of 15 in the state.
Accredited trauma centers must be continuously prepared to treat the most serious, life-threatening and disabling injuries.
Being designated as a Level 1 Trauma Center is an accomplishment we all can be proud of, said Keith Clancy, M.D., medical director of trauma surgery at York Hospital.
Most importantly, the community we serve can be confident that, should they need a trauma center, the care and quality they can receive at York Hospital is of the highest quality and caliber.
Clancy said achieving status as a Level 1 Trauma Center has been the result of many long hours of hard work by numerous individuals.
It wouldnt have been possible without the vision and support of the administration and boards of WellSpan and York Hospital, he added.
York Hospital President Dick Seim said, The Level 1 designation is a testimony to the capabilities and commitment of all of our staff who are associated with providing and supporting the York Hospital trauma services.
We are fortunate to have the uniquely talented physician specialists, nurses and support staff necessary to earn this highest level designation.
Literally hundreds of York Hospital staff members positively impact the care of each trauma patient every day. Those include nursing, respiratory, lab, imaging, dietary, physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, case management, volunteers, chaplains, patient reps and many others.
Its the hard work of these often unrecognized staff members that really makes our trauma program the success that it is, said Clancy.
And, I cant say enough about our Trauma Services staff who collect data on each of our trauma patients so we can review it and ensure that the quality we provide meets our goal of high quality care to every patient, every day.
