I think Bard should be the least of anyone's worries when attending Columbia -- I don't expect that most people live there for more than a year, if at all. If I choose Columbia, I'll just try to get into the Towers or get an apartment.
Bard Hall also seemed a little rough - I'd like to be able to cook, and the 1 kitchen:however many floors setup is kind of disappointing. Any current students care to share their experience with this?
for me, the only problem is that most of my first year friends are female...do they do co-ed rooms in the towers? i didn't get to do the whole tour...
i'm a first year at columbia, we have wireless in bard now. seriously, bard is awesome, we have a lot of fun, too much sometimes, and if you need study help, you walk 10 steps. and as far as course materials online, columbia is more than adequate. i lean on the online course materials to pass exams. those accepted, come for second look, we have some sweet stuff planned so i've heard.
I got the impression that there weren't a lot of curricular resources, histology slides, etc. online. It sounds like you know something that I don't, though - can you explain the reference to "downloading the material"?

Thank you! - andto all!
there are actually TWO stoves and TWO fridges in the same kitchen. in all seriousness, i've never had trouble cooking in the kitchen, which i do maybe once or twice a week. i have my own fridge in my room, which i'd recommend. the common fridges smell a little funny sometimes. they're supposed to be building another kitchen on the third floor as well. as far as online stuff goes, all slide are posted and any other pertinent course info., all lectures are annotated for our second most time consuming class (SB), HD lectures are transcribed by a girl in our class, which is huge, and class websites have any other material you need to fill in the gaps. the problem with med school is not not having enough study aids (does that make sense?), but figuring out which ones work for you. hope this helps.
another 1st year P & Ser here. just wanted to add my voice about the technology thing, because i got the same impression on my interview here last year (that they were nonexistent). i was pleased to find when i came here that my impression was way off.
they're actually QUITE good. all the lectures are recorded, and some pertinent ones (such as neuroanatomy) are videotaped. there are some phenomenal online atlases for histology, anatomy and neuroanatomy designed by our instructors here and made specifically for columbia students that the whole class relies on. old exams are posted for us to use to study. in our physiology course, not only are the lectures recorded, but the lecturers will also sit down and record a 20 minute, truncated lecture timed with the slides going over the most important information from each slide.
in addition, before every exam block, the 2nd years hold study sessions for the 1st years to review all the lectures and provide us with an indispensable study packet to help guide our pre-exam study efforts. it's really remarkable.
our physiology instructor has also designed his own online simulators for renal, cardio, and pulmonary, which i have secretly provided to students at other med schools because they are so useful. he also will frequently host "online office hours" from his home where he'll go over the simulators via online conferencing with us and answer any questions we may have. we also do that interactive clicky thing during many lectures to keep us active and awake.
also -- there is now wireless in bard.
so yeah, don't let the seeming lack of technology spook you. as pjl said, there is more than enough provided to allow us to succeed. and if you take advantage of them you will have no problem succeeding.
To any current P&S students, are the first two years graded P/F?
Thank you, Dienekes. All I remember from the (abbreviated?) tour we got was seeing the 2nd-year apartment-style housing. Then again I had, like, 6 interviews that day, so out of sheer exhaustion I blocked most of it out of my memory. 😛 😳I'm not a current student, but I remember this from the tour. The first year is P/F. The second year is H/P/F. I think 15% get honors.
there's talk of our class being P/F next year, if not us, i would think you guys would have to be. our reps spoke with deans, and we had a first year survey, and our class was overwhelmingly in favor of it. the administration is very receptive to what we want.
anyone finish financial aid stuff?
I've been working on it like mad for the past few days. I hope to get it out tomorrow or the next day. Such a pain! I had way more fun filling out AMCAS and secondariesFAFSA is fine, but this Need Access thing is beast.

do we need to turn in that pink paper with all those activities on it or just need access + fafsa?

OK, so the mail from Columbia actually arrives in my son's college mail box today, and it is a
Waitlist! Go figure
(he has acceptances at Wash U and UCSD)
Crap. I'm about to finish the FAFSA and haven't even started the Need Access thing. We have 'til March 20th, right...???
Are you guys definitely going to Columbia? 🙂
I hope we have until March 20 because we just sent our taxes to the accountant in my family. I hope they finish them in time so I can complete all those forms!!
I'm honestly on the fence with Columbia. Its going to come down to second looks between Columbia and two other schools. Also financial aid will be another factor to consider.
On the fence?! 😱 Nooooo...!!!
No need to be mysterious about the other schools. I've seen you posting in the UCLA and Cornell threads. 🙂
My cover is blown. 😉
Stalker! 😛
I guess you're 100% on Columbia?
It is hard to say how this will all play out for him. After all of his interviews, Harvard emerged as his true first choice. He was equally impressed with Columbia and Wash U. and will stay on Columbia's WL depending on the outcome of the Harvard decision.
He just decided to decline an interview at OHSU, and withdrew from JHU and USC.
The smart money for him is on Wash U.
I'm hoping someone can set me straight here...
...Maybe I'm just daft today, but where the heck am I supposed to get Estimated Income and Expenses numbers for 2008 from? Just guess based on what they were for 2007?
Hey does anyone know when the wait-list at Columbia will start being filled?
