I know, he's kick ass. We went to Hooters for lunch. 🙂
What rotation is this?

I forgot how much I like Des Moines till I came back. Awesome place. Especially those new developments in West Glen on Mills Civic. Very yuppy (yuppie?), but nice nonetheless.

I really would love to thank Dyche for being the most inconsiderate prof I have ever had. 👍

Lucky,
I was worried about that too, but I've realized that if you are up front about it the good attendings not only teach you the important things to know about all that other crap (CHF, Htn, etc) but they will try to point out what you are interested in and talk it over with you. Luckily MI seems to be a small world so all my attendings know or have heard of each other so they have all been great when it comes to what I'm interested in and who I've worked with.

Back to saving the world one diabetic at a time.

Most attendings have tried to talk me out of radiology. I say, to each their own, there's a field for everybody, not everybody wants to be like you, dammit. Many of them think their own specialty is the best. But some of them say they wish they went into rads. And they ALL bring up reimbursement.

what happens if you miss 3 days in a week? My wifes grandfather died last night and the funeral is going to be Wed/Thurs in Colorado. So. If its Wed. Ill miss 3 days in this week. Do I fail the rotation? Isn't there some kind of clause where you can make up hours?

Thanks, let me know. Im kinda on a time crunch.

Sorry about your loss G.

Whats up guys, I can believe how much I miss DSM and all the people there. I'm going out of my mind in NE Ohio. I've finally decided on my specialty I'm going to do FP with an ephasis in OMM. Yup, you read right! FP cliic with some OMM thrown in is for me. Who would have guessed!

OH... MY... GOD. I would have never guessed!

Just goes to show how much 3rd year can change your mind. Good for you, DocG, I'm sure you'll be a success in whatever field you choose. 😀

Any thoughts on where to stay for a month in Iowa besides the Warren House?

Have you seen Dr. Dicky around? How's he doing? I miss the original SDN bunch!

They had baby #2 and he's off in Columbus. I have'nt talked to him since we moved out here. I did talk to MP who I ran into at OSCE (kind of like a lame SPAL for OU) he says Dr.Dickey wants to play with radioactive materials and work from the Golf Course.

That's right. He has also seen the light (or dark??) like I have. I just hope we don't apply to the same places because he'd kick my @ss out the door!!

Any PD who does'nt take the both of you on the spot has his/her head up their a$$. Between the two of you, you'd either cure cancer or destroy the world...

It's a toss up as to which way it would go...

Haha! Reminds me of Pinky and the Brain. I'm definitely Pinky...😀

I miss that show soooo much!

Pinky: What are we doing today Brain?

Brain: The same thing we do every night Pinky. Try and take over the World!!!!

Wonder if it's on I-tunes?

Probably can find a clip of that by Googling. That was a staple of my childhood.

Can you not wait for the new X-men to come out? And the Da Vinci Code. Great cast.

Time for bed! I'm getting all ADHD. Thanks for catching me up on your oh-so-exciting life, Docgeorge!

A) I'm tired of getting email hate mail about people not doing 5 days a week on rotations: 1) My attending works 4 days week, 2) We pay a crap ton of money to the school and if our attendings don't care if you are there 5 days a week, then its up to them, I don't remember seeing Dr. R or B or S listed as my attending, 3) I've learned more about OB/Gyn on this FP practice than I did on my OB/gyn rotation so makes me feel like that month was a waste even though I was there 5 days a week

B) DocG never would have guessed it, but congrats on figuring it out, I have taken your place in the torture chair and am currently gunning for a spot at Providence, so we'll see what happens

C) For our fourth year FP can we do 8 weeks at one spot and count it, and is it impossible to get a rotation in dsm, because I want to be around my fam in dec/jan when we are interviewing and figuring out where we match

D) Mr. Pib + Red Juicy Juice = Crazy Delicious

peace out

Doc George, what happened to surgery, brother?

Creamy, That is what the portal said. I also asked DR. Sahffer and he said you can get inner city and NHSC sites approved through him, he just has to okay it...

Yes. We're going to try to do 8 weeks straight too.

Damn liars and the deceiving ways on the sdn..............

Cremaster, good luck at providance man! Keep in touch with the Guy from DMU who's going to be an intern there next year. If you dont know his name I'll PM it to you.

Ok I was being sarcastic about FM. I cant belive that any body actually thought FM would be for me, the thought of being in clinic seeing HTN and sore throats makes me cringe. I think i'm leaning toward vascular surg. I got in some NS cases here and I decided that I absolutely hate back work so that effectively discounts NS for me. Are you going to check out LIJ?

I'm checking out Providence, Doctor's, and Bromenn officially mostly because I want to stay in the Midwest. I've heard some interesting things about arrowhead that I may PM sometime if you are interested. I really like Providence though, I've been going there on the weekends and some week nights and the residents are great and they did well on their inservice exams. It's pretty funny.....one of the reasons I don't want to do general is I don't like some of the specialized work (ie vascular) and I know I don't just want to do general if I go that route. I actually like spine surgery quite a bit, brain stuff is way more interesting, but spine cases aren't bad. My last attending let me throw in some cervical screws and what not, so I had a good month. What programs are you looking at for general? Oh and I think I might live with that resident for a month when I am at Providence, but I've worked my way into the loop somewhat, I'll let you know if I need anyone elses name, or if you think of someone I should talk to shoot me their name.

gagolden said:
I talked to my attending today, explained the situation and he said. "Ill give you the patient schedule for that day.. you can f@#$ing pretend you were here."

......problem solved.

I'm pretty disaponted. Not in you my main man, G. I'm disapointed in how the administration is handling this transition of power. Students don't just make up ideas about "Well, I think I'll work 3 days a week and that will be good enough." We were told this by Boz, and the OCA coordinators.

To change policy and threaten employees (students) in the same breath seems fascist to me.

We have a really good student body who all want to be good doctors (with maybe the exception of A$$master and A$$master jr. (cremaster and astrolube) who just want to look spiffy in scrubs and work out in an OR cap (Dr Roe wannabees!)).

Lot of stacked parentheticals there....at any rate, It's always been my experience that things are a certain way because someone made policy that supports it...officially or unofficially. In this case we were instructed to do what we did, and then we get threated for it.

The other thing I don't like about this command and control policy is it's inflexibility. In the real world they look at hours, not days. If you work 16 hour days should you really have to work 5 days a week? What about weekend call, is it ok if you're on 24h call and they let you off 2 days? I hate policy that is overly stringent in it's management. Until you have proof of abuse, you should have open minded policies. However, the abusers always screw it up for the rest of us. I theorize someone mouthed off to someone they shouldn't have!

Next, The infrastructure isn't in place to accurately log each hour of a student's day (thank God!). Unfortunately, we ARE the class that is breaking our teeth and the administration's on this new method of doing business. When students were just doing paper logs, they didn't see a daily output. Now that they have new data, and new bosses, they don't exactly know where to set "normal."

I'd personally be a little less heavy handed in laying out new policy to a group of people who I know are high achievers. I have to say that I know why he's being heavy handed with us, though: I reckon a bunch of our classmates emailed him and said, in less than professional wording, that we weren't told we had to do more than 3 days a week. Or some poo poo head at a site told an attending who wanted him/her to work 5-6 days per week that "Our school only requires 3 days a week, and that's all I'm going to work. I AM PAYING 30K a year for this!" If this got back to me as the Dean, I'd be pissed, too!

In the end: "If they want you to wear 36 pieces of flare, they should make that the minimum."

I sat down to check me email after lunch like always, and I get a message from my clinical affairs coordinator that says: Hi, Just FYI, and then it is most of Dr. Reed's message copied and pasted. I haven't sync'd my pda since monday because I was waiting for my hot spare laptop, but I hate that crap. She did not send that messsage to anyone else and she wanted me to send a receipt that I read the email. I haven't taken a day off since like the 1st week of march because I was DYING, and I've only taken 2 days off in a week because I was moving and packing going from iowa to michigan. Another of our classmates who has the same coordinator as me did not receive the email, so it leads me to believe for some reason she is singling me out, whether it is because I haven't sync'd my pda or because there were 5 days total in 9 months that I have taken off..........either way this is all crap, and I don't care anymore, I wish I could block their emails since I show up and work hard and enjoy what I do. And Bernard, Astro and I are probably two of the hardest working people since he scrubs extra cases at his hospital and I go in voluntarily on the week night and weekends to help round and scrub neuro cases at the residency I am interested in.

Hopefully they get this taken care of because I do not want to receive any more emails about it, or to keep receiving them for the next year bi-monthly until we graduate.

The problem with most medical students is their LACK of worth ethic when duty calls. Rather than being a little biotch and asking dumb questions (such as how many days q week we must work), I wish they would just show up and do their job well. I will not even begin to list the number of weeks where i did not work 5 full days (OB/GYN, Peds, Psych, and hopefully FP when the time comes). But I was there when they wanted me there. Frenchie is probably correct: some idiot ran his/her mouth when asked to work a few extra hours.

I only log patients that are NEW to me. Otherwise, I'd have 30 logs a day which would be the biggest waste of time ever.

I'm just bringing back the fact that sitting at panera on saturday for 3 hours studying is not only school productive, but visually stimulating................hot chicks everywhere. I should open a panera so that I can have a haven for hot chicks to amass at and then swoop in with Bernard like accuracy...........

Oh, I know you work hard...in fact to reward you I'll let you be the man next time we spend "special time."

👍

Jordan Creeks' wireless internet is faster than the school's and the fireplace is bigger, and the coffee is better, and there is even a play place.

Why didn't I just go to Jordan Creek to learn to become a doctor?

{Oh yeah, it's because faggy security guards will ask you to take your feet off a coffe table specifically designed to put your feet on. I'd like to make him eat that Smokey the Bear hat...like he really earned it at that weekend Security guard class. Did they teach him to have a gut the size of bears when bears hibernate, too? Maybe it'd be a good idea to institute an exercize program for mall security guards. I'm sure the doughnuts are safe!)

There are also adolescent girls working and eating here so Mike would have something to do!

BTW, a 60gb iPod is a pretty swell toy, but garners funny glances in Des Moines.

Didn't we all have a walkman everywhere we went in the 1980's?

Did you guys buy any question book stuff yet for boards, and if so what did you buy?

So surgery boys, how many hours do you spend on your surgery rotation per week? (just curious)

babyruth said:

Not that Im going into surgery, but I worked 7 am to 5/ 6 M-F on my surgery rotation. No call or weekends. It was pretty nice.

Ray,
At least I didn't get my internet temporarily suspended after the server detected massive downloads of porn/torrents.

"Let's see here. X-rated girls, already bookmarked, dial extra sex. What's this Mr. X? Hmm, shall I cross the final frontier? I shall! alt.nerd.obsessive.boobies.."

I was trying to find those pictures of your mom....

BTW, what is a "torrent" in that context?

General Surgery at Mt. Clemens: average work week about 70-80 hours with one night of call. When you work the weekend you stay over on sunday and end up working 100+ hours. I put in 110 in one week, but I also was a surgery gunner.

Neurosurgery at Mt. Clemens: I got there at 5 to round and went home anywhere between 5 and 9 at night, I also took call because they had no residents and I would be first assist.

I haven't purchased any new books to study from yet. I am going to buy the Kaplan questions at the end of this month for 3 months and get USMLEasy I believe so I have the option of both.

I also have a question for you guys. I am trying to set up my 8 weeks of FP for fourth year between Nov. and Jan. I am having a hard time about what else to sign up for fourth year. I don't know if you guys have any suggestions for good rotations and where they are at but let me know. I think I should do an ICU/CC, another IM, possibly Cardio, ID, Pastics, Neurology, etc. etc. I just don't want to do a month of something I"m going to absolutely hate. So if you know of a good rotation in any of the above mentioned, or had a great rotation in something else please let me know!

386 days until graduation.

I really loved cardiology and I think you definately need this rotation for whatever you go into. I am here in Ohio so I don't know if you wanted to do one here, but I really enjoyed my experience. It was run o fthe mill pathology but you are actively involved in patient care and get to see a lot of heart caths and angios. Cardiothoracic surgery might be something you want to check into as well (for like a two week rotation) just to get a feel for CABG, valve replacments, thoracotomies/lobectomies, etc. We only have one CT surgeon at this hospital so you would get a lot of action here, especially if you told him you were going into surgery.

You could also try looking into the Cleveland Clinic or Case western health systems because they do a whole lot of different path stuff up there for neurology etc. (in cleveland)

Thanks for the input, I just tried to get Iowa Heart Center on University for cardiology because I was reading the comments and you spend most of your time int he cath lab, and have some freedom to follow other cardiac specialists around. You also only spend like 2 days in the clinic😉 I may have to check out rotations in OH. I'm just tired of moving around and getting comfortable with one place and then moving again. Starting in mid June I move every month for like 4 months🙁 Any good Critical Care or Trauma Surgery rotations where you are at?

anyone know of any good neuro-radiology or neuro-path rotations? Besides the Case Western or Cleveland Clinic neuro-path🙂

I am not sure here because this is a small hospital, again you could try cleveland...

Creamaster,

I forgot the guys name but he's the head of radiology at VCOM (he's an MD). The guy literally wrote the book neurointerventioal radiology. I'm pretty sure you can get the info off of VCOM's website. He gave a little talk at the surgery confrence last year the man is brilliant. I would spend some time with him if I were going into Neuro. Besides I think you would really really enjoy the local talent at Virginia Tech 😉

PM me the dirt about Arrowhead.

babyruth, have you dumped your husband yet? When are we going to run off together? 😍

Let's have a round of applause for Portier & his cynical, yet informative article in the Innominate. 👍 In all honesty, it was a great article & maybe the first I've read completely. Thanks for answering some of the questions I have been trying to find answers to while not studying for Neuro.

babyruth and Doc thanks for the input. I'll look into that stuff. I set up a cardiology rotation in DSM at Iowa Heart, and I"m thinking about doing plastics back there as well just to get the full "surgical experience". I'm so ready to be done and getting a pay check even if its minimal at best.
