"Hypothetically", if you match, should you call the program on match day?

Will someone with access to the Match Website please list the OMFS programs that did not match a resident? Thanks!

Best of luck to you all!

I thought getting wasted last night would help me sleep but apparently it doesn't work...it's 3AM now and I can't go back to sleep:scared: Best of luck to you all and hope everyone's hard work finally pays off in a few more hours.

Tell me about it. It was one of those nights where I went to bed at midnight, and then after seemingly 4 hours when I looked at the clock, it was 12:28.

Got the "We regret to inform you that you did not match to a position." e-mail. Not surprised b/c I didn't rank any programs (long story)..just thought I'd let folks know that it's been released. List of unmatched spots will be released at noon EST according to the e-mail. Good luck to all

Gary "Match This" Ruska here,

The results, according to natmatch.com:

OMS: 2007
Applicants Participating in the Match: 334 (+19)
Positions Offered:195 (+4)
Matches / Positions Filled: 181 (-5)
Unfilled Positions 14 (+9)

So, strictly speaking, the match rate was 181/334 = 54.2%...There may be some nuances to how to calculate the match rate, but this simple metric may be a start...

By the same token, here are the match rates for the other specialties:

Ortho: 251/481 = 52.2%
Pedo: 254/479 = 53.0%
*Endo (right out of school) = 1/1000 = 0.1%
*Endo (after GPR, etc.) = 30/50 = 60.0%
*Perio (domestic grad) = 1/1 = 100.0%
*Perio (foreign grad) = 1/1 = 100.0%

*Estimates only, may be higher or lower than predicted.

yeah, but the number participating in the match are only those who submitted at least 1 school to the match. The true number of those applying is much greater - because some people didn't get an interview, or listed 0 places for whatever reason.

Your estimate shows approximately a 50 percent match rate for OMFS, but remember that the majority of the people that didn't match don't have american dental degrees. If you get onto the match website with your programs access, then you can get info on people who didn't match OMFS, and if you look at their dental school, most say "non US dental school". So in actuality for US dental grads i believe the match rate would be more like 75-80%.

Good Job to all who matched and good luck with your futures.....

I guess it would have to be either Loma Linda, King Drew, Michigan, or Temple, right?

Looks like some programs secretary will get an ass chewing. Or rather did get an ass chewing.....

Or...programs decided who they wanted, and decided to offer the spots to the applicants outside of the match. Is that a possibility?

Not without jeopardizing their future presence in the Match.

As toof related, I doubt that happened. This was just a simple case of programs not ranking enough students or not getting their ranks submitted in time, or something. All in all, some OMFS hopefuls will probably be very happy with the spots that are still open.

Maybe it is just a case of not enough guys wanting to do the six year deal? I sure as hell didn't. It seems like the majority of unmatched positions historically speaking are 6 year spots. I guess the director at Loma Linda got what he finally wanted by converting the program from a four year to a six, now all he needs to do is find someone to take the spots.

I would not discount this assumption. If you recall there were several instances in the past several years of reputable programs giving offers outside of the match while the program was still enrolled in the match. Not naming any names but under-the-table deals happen more than you think.

I agree that it may have happened this year, but the odds would certainly be against so many seats going unmatched because of this.

When programs withdraw from the Match mid-season, can they withdraw certain spots or do they have to withdraw their entire program from Match?

Thanks man. You were my mullet inspiration. When things weren't looking good, I just thought to myself, if Doggie can do it, anyone can do it :D Seriously though, thanks for all your help man. The help I got from here and the experience I got at Parkland really helped me more than you can imagine.
