Hey everyone, I rescheduled my MCAT from 6/18 to 7/30. The thing is, my scores will be released around 9/1....will that hurt my application? I didn't really think about that when I rescheduled (I just wasn't ready). I'm going to submit my AMCAS very soon, my transcripts and LOR are already in. I think I have a good GPA and ECs. Should I be worried...? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

quite honestly, it will be late. do you already have a set of scores or is this your first ones?

if everything else is A+ and you do awesome on the MCAT, you should be fine - but expect some struggles. Many of your fellow applicants will already have their secondaries turned around and interviews lined up. Some schools start regular decision app interviews Sept 1 or shortly thereafter.

with that said, its not INCREDIBLY late. Have everything else in and turn around your secondaries the day you receive them. take some time between taking your mcat and score release to write up answers to secondary questions using last years threads so your secondaries can be turned over immediately and have all your letters in and ready to go.

I agree with the above poster somewhat. Make sure you have absolutely everything else done and submitted.

However, take the extra month you have and study. Do well on the MCAT, and you'll be fine.

Ahh, that makes my heart sink 😱. This will be my first set of scores.

Yeah, I was thinking about writing my answers to the secondary questions after my MCAT (most schools will wait to send me secondaries after they receive my scores, right?).

I am in same situation. My original date is july 2nd. I am planning to reschedule it to Late July as well............Will rescheduling as a 1st time MCAT taker affect application itself negatively? Do you get refund for rescheduling? Or you loose all the money?

I've been wondering the same thing myself -- thanks for the heads-up. I hope you don't mind if I ask... I've got scores coming in by the end of June, but I may need to re-take, and I would get those newer scores on August 2. Is that a bit late as well? Also, if I'm afraid of getting screened out of schools pre-secondary, so I don't know if I should wait before submitting, what do you suggest?

Thanks so much, and sorry for interjecting!

August 1 isn't nearly as late. You should be fine. SUBMIT early! I don't know of any schools outright that are going to reject you with an mcat in progress!

Yeah, you prob won't get your secondaries until your scores are in - but you can pre do your essays for the schools you're applying to.

So if I mess this up, am I looking at reapplying next cycle? Or would it be practical to retake in January after studying hardcore during winter break? Thoughts? I'm just thinking of a backup plan 😀

A January MCAT will not be taken by medical schools for this cycle, to my knowledge. You need to do well on your July 30th MCAT in order to be accepted somewhere this cycle.

January MCAT would be for next cycle.

As to the OP's question: yeah that is late. Try and get everything done as quickly as possible so that only the MCAT is holding you up.

For people that haven't started the application process: take the January MCAT! You don't have to worry about studying for finals and the MCAT at the same time and if you must retake it you still have time.

As others have pointed out, you need to be sure that each and every one of your other ducks is lined up carefully in a row.

I got totally hosed on a late LOR last year. Don't let that happen to you.

OP: it is late...maybe not fatal to your chances, but it will hurt you at most schools.

I'm in the same boat - was originally signed up for 6/18 but rescheduled recently to 7/30 'cuz I just don't feel ready. The way I'm trying to look at it is: yes, delaying it will hurt, but a higher score will make up for that. So just study harder and do better, hopefully your decision will pay off favorably.

Yeah - don't spend time worrying about being late - just use the time to prepare for the MCAT so you can do your best. Last cycle I took the August MCAT and got results back in Sept then submitted AMCAS and turned around secondaries in a month - had no issues getting inteviews at my top schools and acceptances. Seems like it could be too late to some, but I wanted to prepare and do well, so the time was well worth it - good luck!

Thanks! That's always good to hear. Yeah, I pretty much have everything else set for me (LORs, pretty good GPA, ECs, etc). I just want to go to my state school.

To the OP, basically I agree with everyone's comments. It will hurt you, but definitely won't kill you. I personally took the MCAT on 8/7 last year so I didn't get my scores back until early September. However, I made sure all my secondaries were complete before the scores were released so that, as a whole, I was complete in early September.

Just make sure that you only need to take the test once. Good luck!
